No. 9 Emory Men's Soccer Team Tops Chicago

The No. 9-ranked Emory University men’s soccer team remained undefeated on Saturday, using a late goal in notching a key University Athletic Association win over the University of Chicago.  The Eagles edged the Maroons, 1-0, boosting their overall record to 10-0-1 (1-0-1 UAA) while Chicago fell to 7-4, 1-1 in the league.

Providing the heroics for Emory was junior Zach Samuels whose boot from just inside the penalty-box area with just 9:01 left on the clock proved to be the game’s only scoring.  It was his fifth marker of the year, tying him for the team lead in that category.

Chicago had a golden opportunity to take a lead 11 minutes into the second half when it was awarded a penalty kick.  However, the Maroons could not convert the chance as the shot was fired wide of the mark.

Junior goalkeeper Trenton Spindler turned away four shots in picking up his fifth shutout of the campaign while boosting his record to 9-0-1.  Today’s whitewash of Chicago represented the Eagles’ school-record ninth straight shutout with the team not allowing a goal over the last 903 minutes and 44 seconds.

Emory concluded the game with a 17-7 edge in shot attempts while UC held a slim 4-3 margin in corner kicks.  Maroons keeper Chris Giusto finished with six saves

Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Oct. 12) when it hosts Oglethorpe University in a 7:30 p.m. start.
