The Emory University men’s soccer team remained
undefeated, and its defense recorded its fifth-consecutive shutout
performance, during a 3-0 win over Averett University on
Sunday.
The Eagles got on the board in the 26th minute, as
David Garofalo was able to convert a loose ball
into a goal for his first score of the season. The play began
off a Zach Samuels shot which hit the post, but
Garofalo followed through, taking the rebound off his chest and
converting it to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Just before the end of the first half, Nico Dalton
would extend the Eagles lead with his first goal of the
season. On the play, senior Michael
Scannapieco split the Averett defense with a pass that
would find Dalton, who shot it into the right side of the net for
the goal.
Scannapieco would add on a goal of his own in the 77th
minute, his first of the season, off a pass from David
Langton. The goal capped off the 3-0 victory for the
Eagles.
Emory goalkeeper Trenton Spindler played the
first 83 minutes of the contest, making four saves en route to his
seventh victory in as many games this season. Spindler
lowered his goals-against average to 0.16 for the season, before
giving way to backup keeper Alex Wong for the
final seven-plus minutes of the game.
Spindler was aided by the Emory backline, which allowed Averett
just four shots on goal, and seven total shots, during the
contest. Emory is yet to allow more than seven shots on goal
in a game this season, and has now given up four shots on goal on
three occasions during the campaign.
The Eagles have also gone five-straight games this season without
allowing a goal, and have given up just one goal in their seven
games. Emory’s team goals-against average stands at
0.14 for the season.
With the win, Emory improved to 7-0-0 on the season, while Averett
dropped to 5-3-0 on the season. Emory will return home on
Wednesday, hosting Piedmont College at the Woodruff P.E Center at
6:00 PM.
