#9 Emory Men’s Soccer Ties UAA Opponent Brandeis, 1-1

The Emory University men’s soccer team, ranked ninth in the nation, and Brandeis University played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in University Athletic Association (UAA) action from Waltham, MA on Sunday afternoon.

After having not allowed a goal in their previous nine games, the Eagles gave up their third score in as many contests, as Brandeis got off to an early 1-0 lead on a third-minute goal.  The score was notched by Luke Teece, his eighth of the season, after interception a pass in the Emory defensive zone, and chipping a shot over goalkeeper Trenton Spindler.

The Eagles would head into halftime trailing 1-0, despite playing even with the Judges in shots on goal during the half, with four apiece.

However, Emory would even the match midway through the second half, scoring in the 58th minute on a penalty kick goal from Andrew Natalino.  The goal was the team-leading seventh of the season for Natalino, including his third on four penalty kick attempts this season.

The score would remain 1-1 through the rest of the second half, despite dominant play by Emory during the frame.  The Eagles totaled eight shots during the period, compared to just three for Brandeis.  Three of Emory’s shots were on goal, while just one of the Judges was on target.

In the first overtime, Spindler would make a pair of saves to preserve the tie for the Eagles, but Emory was unable to get a shot of its own off.  Emory’s Christopher Howie took a pair of shots during the second overtime, in addition to a two others by Kamron Zia and Natalino, but none of the four found the back of net and the game ended in a tie.

The Eagles record moved to 11-1-2 on the season, including a 1-1-2 mark in UAA matches, while Brandeis went to 7-4-1 on the year, with a 1-2-1 conference mark.

As the UAA takes a break from conference play next weekend, the Eagles will turn their attention towards Maryville College, who they will host on Friday, October 22nd at 7:00 PM.
