Sep 4, 2010

The Emory University men's soccer teamed scored three unanswered goals, including a game-winner from senior Jake Graetz, en route to a 3-1 win over Illinois Wesleyan University in the opener of the Sonny Carter Invitational.

After falling behind in the 17th minute on a goal from Sam Peniak, the Eagles would battle back in the 39th minute to tie the match.  Senior defender Adam Waxman, playing up on a set piece, took the corner kick from Ben Dhiman at the top of the box, and fired into the back of the net for the evener.  It was the first goal of the season for Waxman, and the first career assist for Dhiman.

The game would remain tied for the rest of the first half and into the second, before Graetz would strike with the eventual game winner in the 67th minute.  Off an indirect kick from junior Zach Samuels, Graetz converted a header to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The goal was the first of the season for Graetz, after leading all Emory players with 10 goals and 20 points in 2009.  It was also the first assist of the season for Samuels.

Sophomore Andrew Natalino would cement the victory in the final minute, scoring his second career goal and first off the season off a give-and-go from senior Christopher Howie.  It was the first assist of the year for Howie, after he led the team in assists in 2009 with eight.

In goal, junior Trenton Spindler played the entire match, making five saves and allowing the one score.  Spindler improved to 2-0-0 on the season, and now has a 0.50 goals against average through the first two matches of the campaign.

The Eagles outshot the Titans 17-10 in the match, including a nine-to-six advantage in shots on goal.  Emory took five corner kicks to Illinois Wesleyan's three, and the Eagles out-fouled the Titans 17-8.

With the win, Emory jumps out to a 2-0-0 start to the campaign, while Illinois Wesleyan fell to 0-1-1.  The Eagles have now started their season with consecutive wins 14 times, including seven times in the last eight years, and have qualified for the NCAA Tournament eight of those 14 campaigns.

The victory also puts Emory in first place at the Sonny Carter Invitational, with another game left to be played on Saturday, and two more on Sunday.  The Eagles will be back in action for the late game tomorrow, wrapping up the tournament against Hampden-Sydney College at 2:30 PM.
