Currently in a three-way tie for first place in the University
Athletic Association (UAA), the ninth-ranked Emory University
men’s soccer team will look to separate itself from the pack,
as the Eagles will head north to face New York University on Friday
and Brandeis University on Sunday. Both games are slated for
1:30 PM starts.

Emory University Eagles
Emory will enter play on Friday undefeated during the campaign
with an 11-0-1 overall record, including a 2-0-1 record on the road
and a scoreless tie against Washington University (Mo.) in its only
UAA road contest. Last Tuesday, the Eagles earned a 3-1 win
over Oglethorpe University at home, wrapping up a perfect, albeit
brief, two-game home stand. The Eagles are led offensively by
junior Zach Samuels, who leads all Emory players
with six goals and eight assists for 20 points, and defensively by
goalkeeper Trenton Spindler, who is 10-0-1 with
five shutouts and a 0.10 goals against average this season.
Emory is coached by Sonny Travis, who is 55-9-4
during his four years with the team.

New York University Violets
NYU will enter Friday’s game with a 7-2-2 record this
season, including a 3-0-1 record in its last four games and a 3-1-1
mark in home matches this season. Most recently, the Violets
earned a 2-0 win at Case Western Reserve University last
Saturday. The team’s leading scorers this season are
Paolo Luciano, who has eight goals and four assists for 20 points
this season, and Kyle Green, who has tallied six goals and two
assists for 14 points, and was named the UAA’s Offensive
Player of the Week last week. Goalkeeper Matt Stieve has
started all but one game this season for the Violets, going 7-2-2
with three shutouts and a 0.60 goals against average. NYU is
led by head coach Joe Behan, 134-113-26 during his 15 seasons with
the squad.

Brandeis University Judges
Brandeis will begin the weekend with an overall record of
7-3-0 this season, and will host Carnegie Mellon University on
Friday before playing Emory on Sunday. The Judges are 3-1-0
in home matches this season. Brandeis, which features one of
the top-scoring offenses in Division III this season, is led
offensively by Luke Teece, who has seven goals and two assists for
16 points this season, despite making just one start.
Goalkeeper Taylor Bracken has started eight of the Judges 10 games
this season, going 5-3-0 with a 1.01 goals against average.
Brandeis is led by head coach Michael Coven, who has an overall
record of 421-239-45 during his 38 seasons with the team.

Matchup Histories
Emory is 16-2-4 all time against New York University,
including a 6-2-3 record in games played in New York. Last
season, the two teams played to a scoreless tie in Atlanta, with
Spindler playing all 110 minutes and making two saves to earn the
shutout. Emory’s defense allowed NYU to take just four
shots during the match last year.
The Eagles have gone 17-5-1 all time against Brandeis, including
wins in three-straight meetings, but just a 4-5-1 record in games
at Brandeis. Last season, the Eagles handed the Judges a 3-0
defeat at the Woodruff P.E. Center, with goals from Zach Samuels
and Michael Scannapieco, and a three-save shutout
for Spindler.
UAA Update
Emory is currently tied for first in the UAA with
11th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) and NYU, each of
which has a 1-0-1 conference record. Following the trio at
the top are Brandeis, the University of Chicago, and Case Western
Reserve University, all of which are 1-1-0 in UAA play. In
seventh and eight are the 20th-ranked University of
Rochester (0-1-1) and 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon

Emory senior Adam Waxman was named the
UAA’s Defensive Player of the Week, after helping to shutout
the University of Chicago last week… It was the first career
Athlete of the Week honor for Waxman… Waxman’s honor
marks the sixth time in as many weeks this season that an Emory
player has been named the UAA’s Defensive Player of the Week
for men’s soccer… Emory’s program-record streak
of nine-consecutive shutouts came to a close on Tuesday, as
Oglethorpe scored a goal in the 81st minute of the
contest… The streak stretch 983 minutes and 52 seconds of
game time… Trenton Spindler began the week ranked second
among all Division III goalkeepers in goals against average and
save percentage, and improved both statistics on Tuesday to a 0.10
goals against average and a .977 save percentage… He has not
allowed a goal in his last 817 minutes and 36 seconds in the
net… Zach Samuels began the week ranked 19th in
Division III in assists per game and 81st in points per
game.
