The ninth-ranked Emory University men's soccer team came
out on the short end of a game for the first time this season,
losing 1-0 at New York University on Friday afternoon.
The Eagles fell behind in the first half, as Colm Dillane gave NYU
a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season in the 34th
minute of play. He scored off assists from Kyle Green and
Adam Fein.
The goal was just the second allowed by goalkeeper Trenton
Spindler this season, and the first he has given up in his
last 851 minutes and 25 seconds in goal. It was also just the
third goal allowed by Emory overall this season, but the second in
the last two games.
Emory's best opportunity of the first half came in the
closing seconds of the period, as NYU's goalkeeper, Matt
Stieve, was issued a yellow card, setting up a penalty kick for
Andrew Natalino. However, Stieve deflected
Natalino's shot off the penalty kick, and made a second save
as Zach Samuels took a shot off the rebound.
After finishing the first half trailing NYU 7-5 in total shots and
playing even in shots on goal with three apiece at the half, Emory
would begin to apply more pressure in the second frame. In
the 75th minute, sophomore Alex Scott took a
header shot on goal, but once again Stieve saved the day for
the Violets, deflected the shot off the crossbar for the save.
The Eagles outshot the Violets 5-3 in the second half, and held NYU
without a shot on goal during the period. However, the Eagles
were unable to convert on either of their two shots on goal during
the second half. Each team finished the game with 10 total
shots.
Spindler fell to 10-1-1 on the season with the loss in goal, his
first since October 30th of last season against the
University of Rochester. He made two saves in the effort,
while his goals against average moved to 0.18 for the season.
With the loss, Emory fell 11-1-1 on the season, and to 1-1-1 in UAA
matches. The 12-game undefeated to start the season was the
third-longest in school history. NYU took sole possession of
first place in the conference with the victory, improving to 2-0-1
in the UAA and to 8-2-2 overall.
The Eagles will wrap-up their two-game conference road trip on
Sunday, playing at Brandeis University at 1:30 PM on Sunday.
