Emory University's Andrew Natalino and
Zach Samuels each picked up a goal and an assist
during the team's opening game of the Shellenberger Soccer
Classic, guiding the Eagles to a 4-0 win over Randolph College on
Saturday.
The Eagles weathered a sluggish start to the game, and despite
being outshot 8-4 by the WildCats in the first half, managed to
escape the frame with a lead thanks to Natalino. The
sophomore scored the contest's first goal, and the eventual
game winner, in the 42nd minute off a direct kick, his
second of the season.
Emory would come out firing in the second half, as Samuels scored
his second goal in as many games in the 55th minute to
give Emory a 2-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Natalino
picked up his first career assist, as junior Nao Masuda converted a header for his team-leading third goal
of the season.
Sophomore Nick Jones would cap off the Emory
scoring, notching his first score of the season off a Samuels
corner kick in the 66th minute. It was the
team-best fourth assist of the season for Samuels in as many games
played.
Through four games this season, Samuels leads all Emory scorers
with eight points, coming on two goals and four assists. Over
his last two games, the junior has recorded two goals and three
assists for seven points.
Emory junior goalkeeper Trenton Spindler earned
his fourth victory of the season, making three saves in just under
64 minutes, and lowering his season goals against average to
0.27. Sophomore Alex Wong made his Emory
debut and became the first Eagle besides Spindler to see time in
goal this season, playing the final 26 minutes and 20 seconds of
the game, while making four saves.
As a team this season, Emory's defense has allowed just one
goal and 22 shots on goal through four games, including three
shutout performances. The team's goals against average
dropped to 0.25 following Saturday's shutout performance.
Emory committed just two fouls in the game to Randolph's 12,
the first time this season the Eagles have been out-fouled by their
opponent. The Eagles outshot the WildCats 19-15 in the game,
including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal, and held a seven-to-four
advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, Emory remains perfect with a 4-0-0 record, marking
the 10th time in school history the Eagles have
accomplished the feat. Randolph dropped to 2-3-0 with the
loss.
The victory sets up a key regional game for the Eagles in their final match of the Shellenberger Soccer Classic on Sunday in Lynchburg, VA. Emory will face host school Lynchburg College, currently ranked fourth in the South Atlantic Region to Emory's seventh-place ranking, at 11:00 AM.
