Ninth-Ranked Emory Ties Washington University (Mo.) 0-0 in St. Louis

Ninth-Ranked Emory Ties Washington University (Mo.) 0-0 in St. Louis

The Emory University men's soccer team, ranked ninth in Division III, opened its 2010 University Athletic Association (UAA) schedule with a scoreless tie against 13th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday.

In a battle of undefeated teams and two of the best defenses in Division III, the Emory backfield extended its school record with its eighth-consecutive shutout, and its ninth overall through ten games this year.  The defense allowed a season-high 16 shots to the Bears, but just five were on goal, and junior Trenton Spindler was able to turn away all five between the pipes.

Spindler's record moved to 8-0-1 on the season, and he lowered his goals-against average to 0.12 in 2010.  He has allowed just one goal on 37 shot attempts against him this season, good for a .973 save percentage.  The shutout was the fourth of the season for Spindler.

Meanwhile, Emory's offense took 15 shots of their own, nine of which were on goal.  Junior Zach Samuels led the Eagles with four shot attempts, all of which were on goal.

Emory took 10 corner kicks to Washington University's five, and out-fouled the Bears 12-11 during the game.

Emory's overall record went to 9-0-1 on the season with the tie, while Washington now stands at 7-0-3.

The tie completes the first weekend of play for the UAA, which effectively turned the conference on its head.  The unranked University of Chicago and Case Western Reserve University were the only two teams to notch victories in their first conference contests.  Meanwhile, ninth-ranked Emory, 13th-ranked Washington, the 14th-ranked University of Rochester and New York University all recorded ties, while second-ranked Carnegie Mellon University and Brandeis University each lost their first contests.

Emory will return to the Woodruff P.E. Center to host the University of Chicago on Saturday, October 9th, in the squad's conference home opener.
