18th-Ranked Men’s Soccer Drops Second Straight Game at Roanoke Invitational

18th-Ranked Men’s Soccer Drops Second Straight Game at Roanoke Invitational

The 18th-ranked Emory University men's soccer team suffered its second-straight loss to open the 2011 season, falling 3-2 to Roanoke College in the final game of the Roanoke Invitational.

For the second-straight game, the Eagles had the majority of the scoring opportunities in the game.  Emory took 13 shots compared to six for Roanoke, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Eagles fell behind 2-0, after Roanoke's Johnny Hughes scored in the 38th minute, and Brian White struck in the 71st

White's goal will kick off a fury of scoring over the next ten minutes of play, as the Eagles will attempt to start a comeback when freshman Javier Puga scored in the 76th minute, converting a rebound off a Zach Samuels free kick that hit the crossbar, to pull the Eagles within a goal.  However, Roanoke's Drew Claytor struck right back for the Maroons, scoring in the 79th minute to extend his team's lead back to two goals.

A minute later, freshman Dylan Price kept the Eagles alive, scoring a goal of his own to make it a 3-2 score with 10 minutes left to play.  The Eagles had one last opportunity after a corner kick in the waning seconds of the match, but could not convert the equalizer.

Emory senior goalkeeper Trenton Spindler took his second loss of the season in the game, despite making a pair of saves.

Roanoke improved to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 0-2-0.  The Eagles will return home next weekend for the Sonny Carter Invitational to face Methodist University on Saturday at 12:00 PM, and Rowan University on Sunday at 1:30 PM.

Emory Notes
Both Puga and Price were named to the all-tournament team following their performance during Emory's two games... Emory has outshot its opponents in three-straight games, dating back to last season… The three goals were the most allowed by the Eagles since November 8th, 2008, when the team lost 4-2 to Carnegie Mellon University… Emory's 0-2-0 start is just the third in school history, and the first since the 2000 season.
