Emory University freshman Dylan Price scored two goals, including the 'golden goal' with under three minutes left in the second overtime, guiding the Eagles to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over UAA-rival New York University and a three-way tie for first place in the conference.
With one University Athletic Association (UAA) game left to play, Emory now controls its own destiny for a conference championship. At 4-2-0 in UAA games this season, the Eagles are tied with Washington University (Mo.) and Case Western Reserve University for the top spot in the conference.
After a scoreless first half, NYU struck in the 52nd minute of play on a Nimo Bergstroem goal, set up by passes from Colm Dillane and Mickey Ingerman.
The score remained in NYU's favor until the 81st minute, when a long throw in from freshman Jeffrey Cochran found the head of Price, who was able to redirect the ball past the keeper for his sixth goal of the season. It was the fourth assists of the campaign for Cochran.
The game would go into overtime, a remained tied at a goal apiece until the 108th minute, when the Eagles received a corner kick opportunity. Junior David Garofalo took the corner, putting the ball on target to junior Nick Jones, whose header attempt was saved by Forrest Sexton, the NYU keeper. However, the rebound bounced to Price, who was able to head it into the net for the 'golden goal.'
Price now leads all Emory scorers this season with seven goals and 15 points. It was the second 'golden goal' of the year for Price, after the freshman scored the game winner in the second overtime of a 1-0 Emory victory over Covenant.
Despite the tight score, Emory controlled the majority of the opportunities in the game, taking 26 shots compared to 12 for NYU, including an 8-2 edge in shots during the two overtime periods. The difference in shots on goal between the two teams was narrower, with the Eagles holding a 7-4 advantage over the Violets.
Sophomore Andrew Goldblum earned the victory in goal for Emory, making two saves and allowing just one goal. He improved to 4-1-0 on the year with the win.
With the win, Emory improved to 10-7-0 on the season, assuring it a winning record for the 2011 campaign. New York University dropped to 7-8-1 on the season, including a 2-4-0 record in UAA matches.
The Eagles will conclude their regular season next weekend, hosting Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Should the Eagles win, they will claim the seventh UAA Championship in the program's history, and their first since 2008.
Emory can also still claim the UAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, with either a win and losses or ties for Case and Washington, or a tie, and losses for both Case and Washington. Washington will play at Chicago at 2:30 PM on Saturday, while Case will host Rochester at 7:30 PM.
Saturday afternoon's Eagles game will also include Emory's 'Senior Day' ceremonies, as the Eagles' graduating seniors will be recognized prior to the start of play.
