Sherr’s Late Goal for Emory Forces 1-1 Tie in Season Opener

Sherr’s Late Goal for Emory Forces 1-1 Tie in Season Opener

Emory University freshman Matt Sherr scored a game-tying goal in the 85th minute of his collegiate debut, leading the Eagles to a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Brewton-Parker College in the team's season opening game.

Sherr's goal was set up by a well-placed free kick from senior defender David Garofalo at the 84:22 mark.  Garofalo's kick, from the near side of the field and just outside the box, ricocheted off a defender before landing at the feet of Sherr, who was able to convert for the score.  Garofalo was credited with an assist on the play, after leading all Emory players in assists in 2012.

Brewton-Parker jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, taking advantage of a defensive miscue by the Eagles.  The Barons' Adam Beattie stepped in front of a clearing pass in the center of the field and just outside of the box, taking a clear shot on goal and converting his first goal of the season.

However, Emory would begin to gain momentum, particularly at the end of the second half.  After Brewton-Parker built a 6-5 shot advantage in the first half, the Eagles battled back to outshoot the Barons 12-3 the rest of the way, including a 10-2 mark in the second frame.

The best opportunity for either team in the second half came on a first overtime breakaway by Eagles' junior Andrew Jones, but his resulting shot went just wide of the net.  In the second overtime, Sherr almost secured an Emory victory with a header off a long throw in from Jeffrey Cochran, but his shot was saved by Barons' goalkeeper Cameron Hall.

Both Hall and Emory goalkeeper Aram Keteyian played 110 minutes, with each making five saves in the contest.  Emory now stands at 0-0-1 on the season, while Brewton-Parker's record moved to 0-1-1 on the year.

The game was played as part of the annual Sonny Carter Inviational, hosted by Emory at the Woodruff P.E. Center.  In earlier tournament action, Oglethorpe University defeated Kean University 3-1.  Emory will wrap up play at the Sonny Carter Invitational on Saturday, hosting Kean at 7:00 PM.
