Eagles Lose Heartbreaker to Kean in Overtime

Eagles Lose Heartbreaker to Kean in Overtime

The Emory University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Saturday, dropping a 1-0 decision in the first overtime period to Kean University to wrap up the Sonny Carter Invitational.

The game-winning goal was scored in the 93rd minute by Erickson Simeon, who was able to collect a rebound off a shot from Jose Arevalo, and return it into the back of the net for the 'golden goal.'  It was the first goal of the young season for Simeon, and the first assist for Arevalo.

Both teams battled to a scoreless first half.  Emory held an 11-7 advantage in shots during the first frame, but the two squads were even with three shots on goal apiece.  It remained scoreless after the second half, with Emory holding an 8-2 advantage in shots during the frame, and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.

Senior Aram Keteyian took the loss for the Eagles, despite making five saves during the game.  John Londono claimed the win for Kean with a seven-save shutout.

Emory dropped to 0-1-1 on the year with the loss, while Kean improved to 1-1-0.

With the loss, Emory finished third at the Sonny Carter Invitational, while Kean secured a second-place finish with the win.  Oglethorpe University claimed the Sonny Carter Invitational Cup for the second-straight season on Saturday, finishing the tournament with a 2-0-0 record, following a 7-1 win over Brewton-Parker College earlier in the day.  The Barons finished in fourth with a 0-1-1 record, based on goal differential.

The Eagles will wrap-up their season-opening three-game home stand on Wednesday, September 5th against Maryville College (Tenn.) at 7:00 PM at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
