Emory Defeats Maryville 3-1 for 1st Win of 2012

Emory Defeats Maryville 3-1 for 1st Win of 2012

Emory University sophomore Dylan Price paced the Eagles' offense with two goals and an assist on Wednesday night at the Woodruff P.E. Center to guide the team to a 3-1 win over Maryville College (Tenn.), Emory's first win of the 2012 season.

With the win, Emory now stands at 1-1-1 on the season, while Maryville dropped to 0-1-1 with the loss.

The Eagles got their offense back on track early in the game, as senior co-captain Andrew Natalino struck for his first score of the season in the 16th minute.  The play was set up by a pass from Price, who was able to penetrate the defense and find Natalino on a run into the box.  Natalino was able to finish off the play with the goal, putting the Eagles on top 1-0.

Emory would add to its first half, lead in the 35th minute on a penalty kick goal from Price.  The penalty kick opportunity was created by junior Andrew Jones, who was taken down as he entered the box on a run near the end line.  Price's ensuing penalty kick bounced off of Maryville goalkeeper Ben Munger's hands, but still found the back of the net for the goal.

Maryville made the game closer in the 66th minute, when Conner McCarty's shot from inside the box ricocheted off an Emory defender and past senior goalkeeper Aram Keteyian for the Scots' first goal of the campaign.

Maryville would remain within a goal up until the closing minutes of the game, when Price would strike for his second score of the game, heading in a David Garofalo corner kick at the 87:56 mark to secure the victory for the Eagles.  It was the second assist of the season for Garofalo.

Price's five points lead all Eagles this season, after he was Emory's top scorer with seven goals in 2011, and second on the squad with 15 points.  It was the second multiple goal game of Price's career, and the five points were a career high for the sophomore.

Keteyian earned the victory for Emory in goal, turning away five shots in the game to improve to 1-1-1 on the season with a 0.92 goals-against average.  Munger took the loss in goal for Maryville.

Emory outshot Maryville 22-11 in the game, although the Scots held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.  Both team finished even in corner kicks with five apiece.

Wednesday night's game wrapped up the Eagles three game season-opening home stand.  Emory will return to action this weekend at the Centre College Tournament in Danville, KY, facing Spalding University at 5:30 PM on Friday and Centre at 6:00 PM on Saturday.
