Emory’s Offense Powers Way to Win over Case

Emory’s Offense Powers Way to Win over Case

Emory University seniors Alex Scott and Andrew Natalino each registered a pair of goals on Friday night, and senior David Garofalo matched a school record with three assists, as the Eagles cruised to a 5-2 win against Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Scott put the Eagles out in front in the third minute of play, heading in a corner kick from senior David Garofalo for his second goal of the season at the 2:48 mark.  After Case responded with a game-tying goal from Eric Erb in the 10th minute (his fourth of the campaign), the Eagles regained the lead at the 21:48 mark on sophomore Dylan Price's 10th goal of the season.  Price scored off a pass from Garofalo that got behind the defense, allowing Price to take advantage of a one-on-one with the Case keeper.

Emory extended its lead in the 29th minute, as Scott scored his second of the contest and the eventual game-winning goal with another header, this time off a long throw in from sophomore Jeffrey Cochran.  Emory would carry the 3-1 lead into the half.

The Eagles would waste little time extending their lead in the second frame, as Natalino struck for his first goal of the game in the 47th minute, heading in another Garofalo corner.  Just over six minutes later, Natalino scored again, this time off passes from freshman Nick Schook and Alistair Moore, giving the Eagles a 5-1 advantage.

Case scored again in the 59th minute, as Bairdy Hansen's first goal of the season cut the Eagles lead to three, but Emory was able to hold on for the victory.

Natalino now leads all Emory scorers with 11 goals and 23 points this season.  Friday's game marked his third two-goal effort of the season.

For Garofalo, the three assists in the game matched a school record set on 23 other occasions by an Emory player.  It was the first time an Eagle has recorded three assists in a game since Nao Masuda accomplished the feat on September 25, 2010 against Greensboro College.

With the win, Emory moved into sole possession of first place in the UAA, with one game left to be played in the conference on Friday night.  The Eagles now stand at 7-5-1 for the season and 2-1-0 in UAA play.  Case dropped to 0-3-0 in conference play and to 3-9-1 overall with the loss.

Emory will wrap up its home conference schedule on Sunday, as the Eagles will play host to the University of Rochester at 1:30 PM.  Sunday will also mark 'Senior Day' for the team, as Emory will honor its seven graduating players prior to the start of the match.
