Men’s Soccer Dominant in Season Opening Win over Marian

Men’s Soccer Dominant in Season Opening Win over Marian

The Emory University Men's Soccer Team started its season on a strong note on Saturday, defeating Marian University (Wis.) 6-2, behind a two-goal effort from junior Dylan Price.

The win gave the early advantage to Emory in the standings at the Sonny Carter Invitational, hosted by the Eagles on Saturday and Sunday.

Price scored twice for the Eagles, striking the opening goal of the contest in the 26th minute off an assist from sophomore Monish Lahiry, and again in the 49th minute off assists from freshman Darion Morgan and senior Andrew Jones.  It marked the fourth multiple-goal game of Price's career.

Sandwiched in-between the Price goals were scores by a pair of freshmen.  Austin Hughes gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead at halftime, scoring at the 38-minute mark on a pass from fellow freshman Scott Haley.  Early in the second half, Max Gomas notched his first collegiate score just 20 seconds before Price's second goal, with assists credited to Morgan and sophomore Sebastian Hardington.

Marian would score a pair of goals in a three minute stretch, as Danny Heerhold launched a shot that bounced in off the crossbar in the 74th minute, followed by a free-kick goal by David Reinke in the 76th minute of action.

However, the Eagles were able to cement the victory with a pair of late strikes.  Sophomore Matt Sherr converted a header in the 86th minute of action off a corner kick from Lahiry, while Jones capped off the scoring 35 seconds later, with assists from junior Michael Rheaume and Hardington.

The Eagles finished the game with 33 shots, including 16 on goal, while limiting Marian to just three attempts, with the two goals being the only two on frame for the Sabres.

Sophomore Abe Hannigan played the first 76 minutes in goal for Emory, earning the victory in the season-opening affair.  Freshman Alexander Herbets made his collegiate debut for the Eagles with 14 shutout minutes between the pipes to finish off the victory.  Jameson Hoerter played all 90 minutes in goal for the Sabres, absorbing the loss for the day.

With the win, Emory now stands at 24-6-1 in home openers since 1983 and at 20-8-1 in season-opening games since 1985.

Emory will wrap-up play the Sonny Carter Invitational on Sunday, when the Eagles face off against Mississippi College at 2:30 PM at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
