Price’s PK Lifts Emory to Win over Mississippi & Sonny Carter Title

Emory University junior Dylan Price converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute on Sunday, his third goal in the first two games of the season, to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 win over Mississippi College and the Sonny Carter Invitational Championship.

Price was named the Most Valuable Player of the Sonny Carter Invitational, and finished the weekend as the tournament's leading scorer.  Joining Price on the All-Tournament team were sophomore defender Matt Sherr, junior midfielder Michael Rheaume, senior forward Andrew Jones and junior defender Noah Rosen.

Meanwhile, Emory raised its record to 2-0-0 on the season with the victory, completing the sweep at the tournament to win the Sonny Carter Cup for the 10th time in 13 seasons.  Mississippi, now 1-1-0 on the season, finished in second place, while Oglethorpe University claimed third, and Marian University (Wis.) fourth.

Sunday's contest got off to a late start, after continuous lightning in the area forced a two-hour and 45-minutes delay.

After a scoreless first half, Price received his opportunity for the penalty kick following a hard foul committed against Emory freshman Jason Andrejchak inside the 18-yard box, after the freshman broke free on a run down the far side.  Price would go on to convert the penalty kick, giving him the ninth game-winning goal of his career, moving the junior forward into sole possession of fourth place in the category in school history.

Meanwhile, Emory's defense played stellar throughout, allowing just seven shots to the Choctaws during the match, just three of which were on goal.  Sophomore goalkeeper Abe Hannigan picked up the win for the second-straight day, converting three saves and recording his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career.

The back-to-back wins to start the season give the Eagles their first 2-0-0 start to a year since the 2010 campaign.

Emory will now turn its attention toward a three-game road trip, which will begin on Friday, September 6th at Averett University.
