#25 Emory Men’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision at Oglethorpe

#25 Emory Men’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision at Oglethorpe

Despite a late push from the Emory University offense, the Eagles were unable to overcome a two-goal deficit at Oglethorpe University on Thursday afternoon, falling 2-1 to the Stormy Petrels.

Emory faced an early deficit in the contest, when Oglethorpe struck in just the third minute of play.  An early Emory attempt on a free kick was cleared away by the Stormy Petrels defense, setting up a breakaway down the field for Sean King.  King drove past the Eagles defense and into the six-yard box, before crossing the ball to Nick Muntean, who tapped it in for the score.

The third-minute strike by the Stormy Petrels put the Eagles behind in a game for the first time during the 2013 campaign.

Emory would finish the first half with nine shots, but just one on goal, while Oglethorpe took six shots, including three on frame.  However, neither team would score for the remainder of the period, as the tally remained 1-0 in the Stormy Petrel's favor heading into halftime.

Oglethorpe added on to its lead in the 61st minute, when Muntean scored his second of the game, again taking advantage of a breakaway, this time utilizing a pass from Gustavo Martinez.

Down 2-0, Emory started to become more dangerous on the attack, finally breaking through for a score in the 81st minute.  Junior Dylan Price cut the Stormy Petrels' lead in half, when junior Jeffrey Cochran launched a long throw in towards the front of the net that Price put a head on and sent into the goal.  It was Price's sixth goal in five games this season, and marked his fifth-straight game with a scoring strike to start the campaign.

For Cochran, it was his third-consecutive game with an assist, and his second this season off a throw-in.  He is now tied for the team lead with three assists this season.

The Eagles continued to push for the game-tying goal late, taking three more shots, including two on goal, in the final seven minutes, and having a corner kick and a pair of throw-ins deep in Oglethorpe territory in the final minute. However, the match-evening score proved to be elusive for Emory, which dropped its first game of the 2013 campaign.

Emory held a slight edge in total shots during the game, 16-14, but Oglethorpe held the advantage in shots on goal, 6-4.  With the loss, Emory fell to 4-1-0 on the season, while Oglethorpe improved to 2-2-0.

Emory goalkeeper Abe Hannigan played all 90 minutes and converted two saves, but ultimately absorbed the loss to fall to 4-1-0 on the year, while Vaughn Moore picked up the win for Oglethorpe with three saves.  Price finished the game with a team-high four shots, including two on goal, while Muntean led all players with seven shots, including four on goal.

The five-consecutive games with a goal scored is a new career-best streak for Price, and is tied for the fifth-longest such streak in the program's history.  The forward, and co-captain, leads all Eagles scorers this season with six goals and 13 points.

The Eagles will return home this coming Sunday, September 15th, looking to bounce back against Centre College at 4:00 PM at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
