Eagles’ Offense Erupts in 4-2 Win over Birmingham-So.

Junior Michael Rheaume, senior Andrew Jones, sophomore Leo Ragazzo and freshman Jason Andrejchak each scored a goal for the Eagles on Wednesday night, as the Emory University Men's Soccer Team earned a 4-2 win over Birmingham-Southern College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

With the win, Emory improved to 6-3-0 on the season, including a 3-2-0 mark at home.  The squad also dealt the Panthers just their second loss of the campaign, as Birmingham-Southern dropped to 6-2-0 overall.

Rheaume put the Eagles on the board early in the contest, scoring his third goal of the season in the seventh minute of play.  After receiving a cross from freshman Max Gomas inside the 18-yard box, Rheaume launched a shot that was saved by the Panthers keeper Jonas Heidrich.  The Emory midfielder remained persistent though, collecting his own rebound and sending a return shot past the keeper for the score.

Emory held onto its 1-0 lead for most of the first half, until a flurry of scoring occurring in the final minutes of the initial frame.  In the 43rd minute, a shot from Spencer Nichols was saved by Emory goalkeeper Abe Hannigan, and cleared out of the box by the Eagles defense.  However, the ball found the feet of Johannes Loeffler, who sent a return shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the campaign, evening the score at a goal apiece.

Emory would regain the lead just moments later, this time with Rheaume serving as the set-up man for the tally.  Rheaume broke down the middle of the field, finding a streaking Jones with a pass into the box.  Jones made a quick turn on the ball to evade the defense, and sent a shot into the goal for his second score of the season.  It was the second assist of the year for Rheaume, as the Eagles ended the first half with a 2-1 lead. 

The Eagles finished the first half with an 11-8 edge in total shots, and a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Emory extended its lead to 3-1 in the 57th minute on Ragazzo's first career goal.  The play was set up by a corner kick from Jones that went through the box initially, but was tracked down by Andrejchak.  After retrieving the loose ball in space, Andrejchak sent a lofting cross to the middle of the box that was headed in by Ragazzo for the score.  It was the third assist of the year for Andrejchak, tying him for the team lead.

The Panthers edged closer in the 77th minute when Brooks Busby unleashed a header inside the six-yard box after a cross from Dallas Coyne that went past Hannigan to bring the score to 3-2.  However, the Panthers' comeback attempt was dealt a blow moments later when Loeffler was issued his second yellow card of the match, forcing Birmingham-Southern to play a man down for the remainder of the match.

Emory took advantage of the extra man, as Andrejchak scored an insurance goal in the 87th minute of action to bolster the team's lead to 4-2.  It was his second goal of the year, and came off the first assist of the season for sophomore Matt Sherr.

Emory took 18 shots during the game, including 10 on goal, while the Panthers finished the game with 14 shots and five on frame.

The Eagles will now turn their attention towards their next contest, a home matchup against Millsaps College at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 28th, which will be a part of the University's Homecoming festivities.
