Men’s Soccer Plays #15 Wash U. to 1-1 Tie in UAA Opener

Men’s Soccer Plays #15 Wash U. to 1-1 Tie in UAA Opener

The Emory University Men's Soccer Team opened conference play at home with a hard-earned 1-1 tie against 15th-ranked Washington University on Sunday afternoon at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

With the tie, Emory and Washington each moved into fourth-place in the conference standings with a 0-0-1 record.  The Eagles now stand at 7-3-1 overall for the season, while the Bears dropped to 6-2-2.

As has been the case in recent meetings between the two teams, the first half would prove to be a defensive battle, despite Emory finishing with an 8-3 edge in shots and a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.  One of the Eagles' best opportunities came at the end of the half, when freshman Max Gomas took a shot from the near side that Bears' goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson was able to deflect with a diving save to prevent the goal and keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

The Eagles would take the lead in the 62nd minute on junior Carl Credle's second goal of the season.  After the Bears cleared an Emory corner kick, junior Jeffrey Cochran collected the ball on the near side of the field, and drove towards the end line before sending a cross to the middle of the box.  A Washington defender deflected the ball, but junior co-captain Dylan Price was able to redirect the ball to Credle, who launched a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

Cochran was credited with his team-leading fifth assist of the year, while Price earned his fourth assist of the campaign on the play, and now leads all Emory scorers in 2013 with 16 points.

Washington would even the score five minutes later, when Michael Flowers' corner found the head of Ike Witte, who finished for his first goal of the season.

Emory had chance to regain the lead in the 80th minute, when Price had a one-on-one with Jebson, and launched a shot on goal.  However, Jebson made another diving save to keep the score knotted at a goal apiece.  The score would remain 1-1 throughout the rest of regulation, sending the match into sudden-death overtime.

Each team would register a shot off target during the first overtime period, as the score remained 1-1 heading into the second overtime.  Emory would be the aggressor in the second frame, registering five shots, including a pair on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net as the game ended in a tie, the Eagles' first of the season.

Emory outshot the Bears by a 25-15 margin during the game, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.  Emory goalkeeper Abe Hannigan played all 110 minutes in net, making three saves, while lowering his goals-against average to 1.18 for the season.

Emory will continue its conference schedule next week, traveling to face the University of Chicago at 12:00 PM ET on Saturday, October 12th.
