Eagles Upset #23 Chicago to Move into First Place in UAA

Eagles Upset #23 Chicago to Move into First Place in UAA

Emory University sophomore goalkeeper Abe Hannigan made a season-high five saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season, and sophomore Sebastian Hardington and junior Dylan Price each scored goals to lift the Eagles to a 2-0 road win against the 23rd-ranked University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon and remain undefeated in University Athletic Association (UAA) play this season.

With the win, Emory improved to 8-3-1 overall, including a 1-0-1 mark in conference play this season.  The win also placed the Eagles temporarily in first-place in the UAA, and leaves open the possibility that the squad could end the day with a share of the lead in the UAA by the end of the day.

Brandeis and Rochester, both 1-0-0 in conference games this season, will face each other later today – should they tie, both squads, along with Emory, will share the UAA lead with four points apiece.  A win by one of the teams later today will put the Eagles in sole possession of second place, two points back of the conference lead.

Chicago dropped to 1-1-0 in UAA games with the loss, and to 6-3-1 overall for the season.

Hardington gave the Eagles a first-half lead, breaking up the early defensive battle with his first goal of the campaign.  The sophomore struck with a header in the 38th minute of action, following a long throw-in from junior Jeffrey Cochran.  For Cochran, it marked his third-straight game with an assist, and his team-leading sixth of the season.

For Hardington, it marked his second career goal, both of which have been game winners in conference games.  Last season, he scored the lone goal during the Eagles' 1-0 win over Carnegie Mellon University in the team's regular-season finale that propelled the squad to a share of the UAA Championship.

The score would remain 1-0 until the Eagles added a key insurance goal in the 75th minute.  Price, a team co-captain, headed in a long cross from senior Andrew Jones for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.  Jones earned his third-assist of the season on the play.

Emory's defense would hold the Maroons off the board the rest of the contest, as the team held on for its fourth clean sheet of the season.  Hannigan faced 15 total shots during the game, but turned away each of the five on goal, as the goalkeeper lowered his season goals-against average to 1.08 and raised his save percentage to .729.

The Eagles will continue UAA competition next weekend, when the squad returns home for games against New York University on Friday, October 18th and Brandeis University on Sunday, October 20th.
