Men’s Soccer Falls 3-1 to #14 Rochester

Men’s Soccer Falls 3-1 to #14 Rochester

The Emory University Men's Soccer team suffered its first conference setback of the 2013 season on Friday night, losing to the 14th-ranked University of Rochester 3-1 in Rochester, New York.

Emory, which entered the day in first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA), dropped to 3-1-1 in conference play and to 10-5-1 overall for the season.  Rochester improved to 12-2-1 overall, and jumped the Eagles in the UAA standings with a 4-1-0 record.

With two games remaining this season for all UAA teams, the Eagles, with 10 points, now sit two behind both Rochester and Carnegie Mellon in the conference standings.  Chicago, with nine points during UAA play this year, is the only other team still in the running for the conference title.  Emory's remaining games are against Case Western Reserve on Sunday and Carnegie Mellon next Saturday, while Rochester will play Carnegie on Sunday and Case next Saturday.  Chicago's final two matches will be against Brandeis and Washington (Mo.).

Playing through strong winds, the Eagles fell behind in the 29th minute of play, when the Yellowjackets were able to take advantage of a corner kick to score the first goal of the game.  Rochester's Jeffrey Fafinski took the corner, sending it into the six yard box where Emory goalkeeper Abe Hannigan was able to deflect it away from the goal.  However, the ball found the feet of Rochester's Keith Grafmeyer, who launched a shot into the net for his fifth goal of the campaign.

The Yellowjackets extended their lead to 2-0 in the 37th minute, when Jeff Greblick notched his eighth goal of the campaign, scoring after sending a low shot into the far corner of the net following a breakaway down the right side of the field.

Emory would respond just under four minutes later, getting on the board behind freshman Jason Andrejchak's fifth goal of the season.  After a shot from junior midfielder Carl Credle was blocked away by the Rochester defense, Andrejchak was able to gain possession inside the box, and return a shot into the net for the goal.  The score remained 2-1 heading into halftime.

The majority of the second half would go by without another goal, until Rochester added a key insurance score in the 83rd minute, when Alex Swanger struck for his ninth of the season.  The Yellowjackets' 3-1 lead would hold for the remaining seven minutes of the match.

The loss was the Eagles' first this season to an opponent ranked in the top-25 nationally, dropping the squad to 2-1-1 in such games.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday at 11:00 AM, when the team travels to Cleveland, Ohio to face Case Western Reserve University in the team's final road game of the 2013 season.
