Eagles Return to First-Place in UAA with Win over Case

Eagles Return to First-Place in UAA with Win over Case

The Emory University Men's Soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon, moving back into a tie for first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with one game left to play in the regular season.

The Eagles' win, coupled with a scoreless tie between Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Rochester on Sunday, setup a tie atop the conference standings between the three teams, each with a 4-1-1 record and 13 points in UAA play.  Emory will host Carnegie Mellon next Saturday, with a chance to clinch at least a share of the UAA Championship with a win.  Rochester will be in action against Case next Saturday.

Case opened Sunday's game strong, taking the first five shots of the contest, including a free kick from Jacob Grindel that hit the post in the 18th minute.  However, Emory began to swing the momentum in its favor starting in the 20th-minute, pressuring the Spartans with three corner kicks and a shot from junior Dylan Price off a free kick.

The Eagles' efforts would pay off in the 28th minute, when sophomore Leo Ragazzo launched a long throw-in that deflected off the hands of the Case keeper, and into the net.  The goal was Ragazzo's second of the season, both of which have been game winners.

Emory's defense would hold tight for the remainder of the game, surrendering just four shots on goal during the contest and keeping the Spartans off the board to earn the clean sheet.  Sophomore goalkeeper Abe Hannigan made four saves during the game, en route to recording his sixth shutout of the campaign.

Emory improved to 11-5-1 overall this season with the win, while Case dropped to 6-6-4 with a 1-4-1 mark in UAA games.

Emory will host Carnegie Mellon at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 9th, the regular season finale for both teams.  Saturday will also mark 'Senior Day' for the Eagles, who will honor the team's lone graduating player, Andrew Jones, in a ceremony prior to the start of the contest.
