Emory Ties #13 Carnegie in Regular-Season Finale; Awaits Results From Cleveland

Emory Ties #13 Carnegie in Regular-Season Finale; Awaits Results From Cleveland

In a thrilling regular-season finale at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday afternoon, the Emory University Men's Soccer Team played 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University to a 1-1 double-overtime tie.  The Eagles will now await the result from the Rochester-Case game to learn of their postseason fate.

With the tie, Emory can clinch a share of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with either a Rochester loss or tie against Case Western Reserve later today.  However, the Eagles will only earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with a Rochester loss (Emory would win the tiebreaker with Carnegie based on goal differential in UAA matches).  The Rochester-Case game is slated for a 5:00 PM start in Cleveland, Ohio.

Live video and statistics for the Rochester-Case game are available at http://livestats.prestosports.com/casewesternreserve/.

If the Eagles fail to secure the conference's automatic bid, Emory will still be eligible for an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament.  The NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced live on NCAA.com at 1:00 PM.  Links to the live webcast will be posted to EmoryAthletics.com on Monday.

The Eagles took advantage of an early penalty kick opportunity to take the lead in the game.  After sophomore Nick Schook was pulled down inside the box by a Carnegie Mellon defender on a scoring opportunity in the ninth minute, the referee awarded the penalty kick to the Eagles.  Emory's Andrew Jones, the lone senior on the team, successfully converted the chance, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

It was the third goal of the season for Jones, who was honored before the game in a special 'Senior Day' ceremony.  It also marked the first penalty kick goal on the first career attempt for the forward, and his 12th career goal overall.

Emory's lead would prove to be short-lived, however, as Carnegie answered back in the 18th minute of action.  Inside the 18-yard box, Carnegie's Matt Sarett passed around a defender to Chris Wysocki, who sent a shot into the net for his seventh goal of the season.

Both defenses would keep the opposing team off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half, but not for a lack of opportunities for either squad.  Carnegie edged the Eagles in total shots in the first half, 6-5, but the Eagles finished with a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal during the first 45 minutes of play.

Carnegie's offense would take control in the second half, outshooting the Eagles 13-4 during the period.  However, the Eagles' defense would bend but not break, and the score remained even heading into overtime.

Emory had two strong chances in the first overtime period.  In the 98th minute, junior Carl Credle sent a cross into the 18-yard box that was headed on goal by sophomore Matt Sherr, but goalkeeper Christopher Madden made a diving save to keep the game alive.  In the 100th minute, a long throw from junior Jeffrey Cochran found the feet of junior co-captain Noah Rosen, but the defender's shot went just high of the net.

The Tartans would go back on the attack in the second overtime, outshooting the Eagles 6-1, including a shot from Max Tassano that hit off the crossbar with five seconds left to play, as the game ended in the 1-1 draw.

With the tie, Emory ends its regular season with an 11-5-2 mark, including a record of 4-1-2 in UAA matches and a 2-1-2 mark against ranked opponents.  Carnegie now stands at 11-2-3 overall for the campaign, and at 4-1-2 in UAA games.
