#9 Emory Men’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision at #7 Brandeis

The Emory University Men's Soccer Team came up just short on Sunday afternoon in a meeting of two of the top-10 teams in the Division III polls, as the ninth-ranked Eagles suffered a 1-0 setback at seventh-ranked Brandeis University.

The loss was the third straight for the Eagles, each of which has been by a 1-0 tally.  After a 12-game unbeaten streak to start the season, Emory now stands at 11-3-1 overall on the year, including a 1-3-0 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) games.

Brandeis improved to 3-1-0 in UAA contests, and to 14-1-0 overall for the campaign with the win.

The first half went by without a goal for either squad, in a period that was highlighted by the two defenses making offensive opportunities few and far between, with each side registering just four shots.  However, early in the second half, the Judges took advantage of an Emory foul inside the box, when Tyler Savonen was pulled down on a scoring opportunity.  Savonen converted the resulting penalty kick in the 50th minute for his eighth goal of the season, giving the Judges a 1-0 lead.

The penalty kick goal would prove to be the difference maker, as the lone goal scored for either squad in the contest.

The Judges outshot the Eagles 9-7 in the contest, although Emory forced Brandeis keeper Joe Gaffy into five saves, while holding Brandeis to just three on-target shots.  Sophomore Jason Andrejchak led all Eagles with two shots, both of which were on goal.

The Eagles will have a 12-day layoff before their next game, an October 31st matchup against the University of Rochester at 5:00 PM at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
