Meyer Nets OT Goal to Give Emory 1-0 Win over Birmingham Southern

Sophomore Christian Meyer provided the heroics again for the Emory University men's soccer team, scoring in the 95th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 overtime win over Birmingham Southern on Wednesday night from the Woodruff PE Center.

Meyer received the far cross from senior Leo Ragazzo despite being tightly guarded one-on-one in the middle of the box. The Hinsdale, IL native controlled the pass, turned and fired it through a crowded middle and a diving goalkeeper to the left corner for the game-winner. The goal was Meyer's fifth of the season which tied him for the team lead. It was also Meyer's third game-winner in Emory's last nine games, all of which have come in the 81st minute or later.

The Eagles dominated possession in the contest even though the game needed overtime to decide an outcome. Emory had an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Panthers 17-1 including a 10-0 margin in the second half and overtime. The one shot was the fewest allowed by an Eagles team since September 23rd, 2009 when the Blue and Gold gave up one shot in a 4-1 win at Piedmont.

Sophomore Graham Labran-Boyd made his first career start and collected his first ever shutout, playing all 94:30 minutes between the posts. Galen Curry, who entered the game at the start of the second half, was handed his first loss of the season. Curry was 5-0-0 on the year.

Emory is now off until October 30th when they will host #10 Brandeis University. Prior to the start of the game, the Eagles will honor their eight seniors with an on-field ceremony.
