UAA Update

Emory moved into a tie for third place in the UAA standings following its 2-1 victory over #8 Washington University this past Saturday, sitting just one game behind first-place University of Chicago. The Tartans are a half-game up on the Eagles entering the weekend following their 3-0 victory over NYU last week.

Friday's slate of games features Brandeis at Chicago, Carnegie Mellon at Rochester and NYU at Washington

Emory University Eagles

The Eagles enter the weekend coming off their biggest win of the season to date, defeating 8th-ranked and previously unbeaten Washington University, 2-1, in come-from-behind fashion to pick up their first UAA win in 2016. Sophomore Moustafa Khattab provided the heroics, scoring on a breakaway in the 87th minute to knock off the Bears. The goal was Khattab's third of the season and his second game-winning goal on the campaign. For the season, Khattab sits second on the team with 10 points and is tied for 10th among all UAA scorers in that category. Junior Austin Mirabella also found the back of the net against WashU, netting his first goal of the season. Classmate Jason McCartney added to his UAA lead in assists on the play, dishing out his sixth helper in 2016. McCartney begins play on Friday night in third among active UAA scorers with 16 points on the season. Junior Jake Deuel collected his fifth win between the posts since taking over the starting role, improving to 5-1-0. Deuel made four stops in the win to raise his save percentage to .724 and lowered his goals-against average to 1.31.

Emory is under the leadership of Sonny Travis who has racked up a career record of 413-137-50 in 31-plus seasons with a 119-45-13 mark in 10 seasons with the Eagles.

Case Western Reserve University Spartans

Case Western Reserve comes into play Friday night with a 4-6-2 overall record and are still looking for their first UAA win of the year after falling to NYU 2-1 and tying Brandeis 0-0 in their first two Association contests. Senior Joshua Prosser is the Spartans' go-to option on the offensive end as the fourth-year forward has registered five of the team's 15 goals. Sophomore midfielder Paul Darmstadter is the only other Spartan to net more than one goal on the year, posting two tallies. On defense, CWRU has allowed just 11 goals in 12 games this season and features two All-UAA selections from a year ago in seniors Zach Broujos and Rusheel Shah. In net, junior Calvin Boyle has started the last seven contests for the Spartans, going 2-5-1 with a 0.97 GAA and a .826 save percentage.

Case Western Reserve is led on the sidelines by Brandon Bianco who is in his fourth season with the program. Under Bianco's leadership, the Spartans have recorded a 31-23-11 overall record.

Carnegie Mellon University Tartans

Carnegie Mellon begins play this weekend with a 9-1-1 overall record and a 1-0-1 mark in UAA action and finds itself ranked 13th in this week's D3Soccer.com Top-25 poll and receiving votes in the NSCAA weekly rankings. Sophomore Zack Masciopinto powers the Tartans offense, entering Friday ranked second in the UAA in goals (7) and points (17). Six of his seven markers have been of the game-winning variety which leads all UAA scorers. Classmate Anthony Gulli is second behind Masciopinto with three goals on the year in addition to three assists for nine points. Fellow sophomore Peter Petrakian leads all Tartans with four helpers on the year. Sophomore Alec Lam and freshman Jack Sampiere have split goalkeeping duties for CMU this season with Lam starting six contests while Sampiere has started the other five. Lam on the year is 4-1-1 with three clean sheets to go along with a 0.49 GAA and a .864. Sampiere is a perfect 5-0-0 to begin his career, posting a 0.40 GAA in addition to a .833 save percentage.

The Tartans are coached by Brandon Bowman who is in his third season with the team, having posted a 28-10-7 overall record during his tenure. In his 16-year career, Bowman has recorded a career mark of 207-56-38.

All-Time Series

Emory has owned Case Western Reserve's number in the all-time series with the Eagles holding a 25-3-1 edge over the Spartans. However, CWRU bested Emory 2-0 last season on their home turf to snap a three-game losing skid to the Blue and Gold.

Carnegie Mellon holds a slim 12-11-6 advantage over Emory in the all-time series. In the previous three meetings, the matchup has been hotly contested with each contest ending in a double overtime time. The Eagles were the last team to collect a victory in the series as Emory defeated the Tartans 1-0 in November of 2012.

Up Next

The Eagles travel to Lookout Mountain on Saturday, October 22nd to face Covenant College in the final non-conference match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
