The Emory University Men's Soccer team heads up north for two key University Athletic Association contests this weekend. On Friday, the Eagles will clash with the Judges of Brandeis University at 7:30 pm before traveling to Riverdale, NY on Sunday to face the New York University Violets at 1:30 pm on Sunday.
UAA Update
The Eagles begin play this weekend 2-1-1 in UAA action, sitting in sole possession of second place and 1.5 games behind first place and top-ranked University of Chicago (4-0) with three games remaining. In addition to Emory at Brandeis, the UAA slate on Friday features Rochester at NYU, Chicago at Case Western Reserve and Washington at Carnegie Mellon. On Sunday, the UAA docket has Emory at NYU, Chicago at Carnegie Mellon, Rochester at Brandeis and Washington at Case Western Reserve in the 1:30 pm hour.
Emory University Eagles
Emory picked up a much needed regional victory its last time out, defeating Covenant College 4-0 on Saturday to improve to 9-3-1 overall. Despite the win, the Eagles remained in the sixth spot in this week's NCAA South Atlantic regional rankings with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Four different Eagles found the back of the net on Saturday against the Scots while the defense held Covenant to just five shots total, the lowest amount allowed by the Eagles this season. Junior Michael Carragher registered the game-winning goal, breaking a scoreless tie in the 39th minute. Emory added three tallies in the second half to provide the final margin thanks to a trio of juniors: Christian Meyer, Jason McCartney and Cody Gardiner. With the goal, McCartney increased his team-lead to 21 points and has now recorded at least one point in five straight games. His 21 points also moved him into a tie for second place among all UAA field players. Sophomore Michael Stier and freshman Jimmy Tricolli had assists for the Eagles in the contest. The assist was the third for Stier on the campaign while the helper was the first point for Tricolli in his collegiate career. Junior Jake Deuel and freshman Trevor Stormes combined to record the Eagles' fourth shutout of the season. Deuel improved to 7-1-1 on the season, making two saves in 83:05 minutes of action. His seven victories place his tied for third among all UAA keepers. Stormes closed out the game, playing the final 6:55 in his collegiate debut.
Emory is under the leadership of Sonny Travis who has racked up a career record of 415-137-51 in 31-plus seasons with a 121-45-14 mark in 10 seasons with the Eagles. He assisted by Cory Greiner, Donovan Ricketts and Dan Klinect.
Brandeis University Judges
The Judges have won three straight including a 2-1 victory against Washington University to move to 8-4-3 overall, 1-1-2 in UAA contests, and moved into the top-8 in this week's NCAA New England regional rankings, coming in at the eighth spot. Senior Josh Ocel has been the go to option on offense for the Judges with the fourth-year midfielder accounting for 17 points on the strength of five goals and seven assists. Junior midfielder Patrick Flahive has tallied four goals on the season while sophomore Andrew Allen and senior Evan Jastremski have registered three and two goals, respectively. Junior Ben Woodhouse has played every single minute between the posts for the Judges this season, going 8-4-3 with six shutouts, a 0.92 goals-against average and 55 saves for a .786 save percentage.
Brandeis is led by Head Coach Michael Coven who is in the midst of his 44th season at the helm of the program. Coven is one of six coaches in Division III history to accumulate 500 career victories and has led the Judges to four straight Round of 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
New York University Violets
The Violets have won two straight against Maritime College and York College (NY) to run their overall record to 7-6-2 but have lost three straight in UAA competition and enter the weekend 1-3 in association action before taking on Rochester on Friday night. The Violets have seen eight different players score at least two goals on the season led by junior Tristan Medios-Simon who has netted seven goals and also leads the team with four assists and 18 points. Sophomore David Victor and freshman Drew Enyedi have each scored four goals apiece with freshman Owen Smith, senior Petter Aasa and junior Nic Notaro each recorded three goals for NYU. Smith has added four assists to tie Medios-Simon for the team lead and ranks second on the squad with 10 points thus far in his rookie season. At goalkeeper, NYU is led by senior Lucas Doucette who is 6-6-2 with a 1.84 goals-against average and leads the UAA with 62 saves in 15 games played.
The Violets are led on the sidelines by second-year Head Coach Kim Wyant. In her two seasons with the team, Wyant has gone 12-18-2. She is assisted by Joseph Ruesgen, Ryan Finnigan, Paul LeSuer and Greg Kenney.
All-Time Series
Friday will be the 29th meeting between the Eagles and Judges dating back to 1987 with Emory leading the series 19-7-2. The two teams have split the previous four meetings, going 2-2 with Brandeis earning a 1-0 victory last season.
Emory has also posted 19 victories in the all-time series against NYU, leading 19-4-4 in the series dating back to 1988. The Violets snapped the Eagles three-game winning streak in 2015, besting Emory 1-0 in Atlanta.
