Taking on the 44th toughest schedule in the country in 2019, the Emory University men's soccer team under the direction of third-year Head Coach Cory Greiner recorded the program's 19th consecutive winning season.
The Eagles finished with an overall record of 9-5-4, a mark of 2-2-3 in the University Athletic Association, picking up notable victories against No.-24 ranked UT-Dallas, Washington University and Brandeis University and saw four players garner postseason accolades from the conference.
The season began with just one win through the first five games, a 1-0 decision over Pomona-Pitzer in the opening game of the Sonny Carter Invitational, but the season shifted beginning in Richardson, TX on Saturday, September 21st.
An impressive weekend at the UT-Dallas tournament helped spearhead a 6-1-0 streak which included a season-best four-match winning streak. The strong stretch led off with a dominating 4-1 victory over Mary-Hardin Baylor before the Eagles knocked off host UT-Dallas, 2-1, thanks to a last-second goal in the first overtime period by freshman Madison Conduah.
Emory led off UAA play with a 1-0 stifling performance at home against the Bears of WashU but followed that outing with a lackluster 0-1-1 weekend up north against Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve. Needing a lot of help to return to the NCAA postseason, the Eagles did their part, defeated Piedmont and Brandeis in its next two matches. However, a pair of draws in Atlanta against tough UAA squads in NYU and Rochester denied Emory a berth to the NCAA tournament.
Junior Nate Sampson was the offensive figurehead for the Eagles in 2019, leading the team in goals, points, shots, shots on goal and game-winning goals en route to his first UAA honor. Sampson was one of three Eagles to earn All-Second Team honors as he was joined by senior Jun Tsuru and freshman Alejandro Gomez on the conference's All-Association team. Tsuru finished his senior campaign with a pair of markers and one assist for five points while Gomez impressed in his rookie season, leading the Eagles with five assists and finishing second on the team with nine points.
In addition to Sampson and Gomez, the Emory offense featured strong seasons from Conduah, who finished third on the team with eight points (3G, 2A) as well as from senior Corey Levine (3G, 1A) and sophomore Ethan Cohen (2G, 3A).
Senior Williams Jones rounded out the Emory performers that gained All-UAA honors as he was tabbed to as an All-UAA Honorable Mention. Jones was a solid contributor as a defensive midfielder and concluded his career with one goal, the game-winner vs. Sewanee, and was one of two Eagles to start in all 18 games throughout the year.
With the help of Jones on defense along with the combined efforts of sophomore Max Carlson and junior Cole Gallagher between the posts, the Eagles were in the top-half of Division III in goals-against average at 1.26 and tallied six clean sheets. Carlson was 116th and 117th in DIII with his GAA of 1.11 and save percentage of 0.786 while Gallagher ranked 134th with his four shutouts.
