Men's Soccer Blanks Birmingham-Southern in Mid-Week Matchup

The No. 19 ranked Emory University men's soccer team returned to the win column Wednesday night, handing Birmingham-Southern a 3-0 defeat in front of the home WoodPEC crowd in Atlanta.

The Eagles won their fourth game of the season, and first at home, behind three different goal scorers and another stellar outing from senior keeper Peter Wagner.

Senior Parker Morford notched his first goal with the program, opening the scoring in the seventh minute of the game. Sophomore Josh Grand sent a cross to the far post, looking for a teammate. The pass first looked like it was going to drift too far of the post but Morford was able to get to it and redirect into the net off the BSC keeper.

Twelve minutes later, junior Ryan Hayes doubled the Eagles' lead with a beautiful one-timer for his second goal of the campaign. Senior Joe Beare set the play up with a perfect pass on the turn, finding Hayes in the middle of the box where he slotted it home.

The final tally of the night came in the 53rd minute when the Eagles were awarded a penalty after Grand was tackled inside the 18. Senior Alejandro Gomez stepped up to the spot and converted for his first goal on the campaign.

The three markers were more than enough for the Eagles as Wagner once again lived up to his nickname, stopping nine shots to record his fourth clean sheet in seven games. Wagner's nine saves eclipses his previous career high of eight which he set on Sunday against Mary Washington.

Emory will continue its three-game homestand on Saturday with an evening tilt against Brevard College. Kickoff is set for 5:00pm at the WoodPEC.
