#10 Men's Soccer Downs WashU, 2-0, in UAA Opener

The No. 10 ranked Emory University men's soccer team took care of business on the road Sunday afternoon, handing the WashU Bears a 2-0 defeat in the University Athletic Association opener at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis.

The Eagles won their fourth consecutive game with late second half goals by fifth-year senior Joe Beare and graduate student Colton Myers. Senior Peter Wagner notched another clean sheet, his sixth in 10 games, making three saves. Emory, now standing at 7-1-2, is off to its best 10-game start since 2018 with the one loss over the span representing the best since the 2014 squad started 9-0-1.

Following a quiet first half where both teams combined for two shots on goal, the final 45 minutes told a different story with the contest pulling a 180 both in terms of offense and match intensity. Over the final 28 minutes of play, the Eagles netted both goals while the two sides registered six cards, including two reds, with both ejections occurring in the 82nd minute leaving both squads with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Myers nearly put the Eagles on the board in the 60th minute as his point-blank shot following a Josh Grand centering pass sailed high over the crossbar. Emory cashed in on its next opportunity however, with Beare striking home a loose ball at the 63:28 mark for his first goal of the season.

Wagner came through with a pair of big-time stops in the 74th and 78th minutes to keep the game scoreless, with his first save of the two being a terrific leaping denial of a Nathan Szpak shot that looked ticketed for the top corner.

With the score 1-0 in favor of Emory, Myers came through with the insurance tally in the 86th minute, directing a free kick into the lower left corner for his team-leading fifth goal.

The Eagles, winners of seven of their last eight games, look to keep the momentum rolling next Saturday when they continue UAA play with a road meeting against Case Western Reserve. Oening kick from Cleveland is set for 1:30 PM on October 7th.
