Second Half Comeback Helps Men's Soccer Stay Unbeaten in UAA Play

The No. 3 ranked Emory University men's soccer team stayed unbeaten in University Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon, using a second half rally to defeat Carnegie Mellon University 2-1 at the WoodPEC in Atlanta.

Late goals from senior Alejandro Gomez and freshman Jaden Emoghene provided the offensive support for the Eagles, moving the team to 3-0 inside conference play (9-1-3 overall) with four UAA games remaining. With the loss, the Tartans dropped to 7-3-3 on the season and 0-1-2 in conference action.

Carnegie Mellon struck first on the afternoon when Josh Baugh redirected the rebound following a Zach Schonwetter shot that drew the crossbar, putting home the game's first goal in the 26th minute.

A turning point in the match came in the 66th minute when CMU's Jake Slackman was ejected from the match following a red card. From there the Eagles took full advantage of the extra man advantage.

Gomez found the equalizer just four minutes following the ejection. Junior Ryan Hayes' first shot was blocked but Gomez was there to control the rebound, make a move around a Tartan defender and find the right corner for his fifth goal of the season.

Four minutes after Gomez's game-tying goal, Emoghene came through with a rocket to the top shelf to give the Eagles the lead for good. It was Emoghene's first career goal.

The Eagles' homestand continues Friday when Brandeis University visits Atlanta in a matchup that will feature two of the UAA's top three teams through the first half of the conference slate. Action is slated for 7:30 PM in Atlanta. Prior to the start of the game, the Eagles will honor their nine-member graduating class with a special on-field ceremony.
