Emory Men's Swimming & Diving 2009-10 Season Recap

Emory Men's Swimming & Diving 2009-10 Season Recap

The Emory University men’s swimming and diving team recorded its 11th top-three national finish during the 2009-10, finishing third at the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Eagles’ third-place finish was the sixth in the history of the program, and the team’s 11th-consecutive finish of fourth-place or better.  Emory finished the meet with 259.5 points scored, trailing second-place Denison University by 11.5 points.

Emory totaled seven all-America honors and 12 all-America honorable mentions in individual events during the four-day meet, while notching three all-America honors and two honorable mentions in relay events.  Leading the way were seniors John Petroff and Tom DiMarco, who each totaled four all-America honors.  Petroff finished as the national runner-up in both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly, while coming in fourth as part of the 400-yard medley relay team, and seventh as part of the 200-yard medley relay team.  DiMarco joined Petroff on the fourth-place 400-yard medley relay team, while taking third in the 200-yard butterfly, eighth in the 200-yard individual medley, and seventh as the leadoff leg on the 800-yard freestyle relay team.

Senior Kevin Yamada wrapped up his Emory career with all-America honors in the 200-yard individual medley, and as part of both the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays.  Juniors Dustin Frissell and Matt Spooner each added on two all-America honors, while juniors Mark Bernstein, Justin Leemis, Mackenzie Perry and sophomore Paul Weinstein earned an all-America certificate apiece.

Earlier in the season, Emory won its 12th-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, scoring 1,855 points during the four-day meet, outpacing second-place Carnegie Mellon University by 331 points.  Yamada was the top performer for the Eagles at the meet, winning conference championships in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke, in addition to the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays.  Petroff and fellow senior Brad Sloan each added on three conference championship performances as well.  Emory swimmers totaled nine conference championships and 24 all-UAA honors during the meet.

Emory finished its dual meet season with a 5-4 record, including wins over Division I Davidson College and the College of Charleston.  The Eagles finished first out of seven teams at the Emory Fall Invitational, and second out of eight teams at the Miami University (Ohio) Invitational.
