Emory’s Whitley & Augustyn Named 2011’s Final UAA Swimmers of the Week

Emory University senior April Whitley and junior Patrick Augustyn were named the final University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimmers of the Week for the 2010-11 season, based on their performances at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships last week.

Whitley came away from the NCAA Championships with four National Titles, including two in individual events and two in relays.  Whitley swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a school record time of 1:01.81 in the preliminaries and the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.62, also a program-best mark.  She was also a part of two championship relays, as the Eagles 200-yard medley relay team won the event with a school-record time of 1:41.58, while the 400-yard medley relay team claimed the title with a school-record mark of 3:42.82.  Whitley was also the national runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley, setting her fifth school record of the meet with a time of 2:03.07 in the preliminaries.

The four National Championships won by Whitley during the meet matches the Emory program record.  Her 77 points scored during led the Eagles to their fourth NCAA Championship, and second in a row.

Augustyn won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:46.87, besting the previous school record by 1.63 seconds, and giving Emory's its seventh championship in a swimming event and 10th overall.  He earned individual all-America honors in the 100-yard butterfly as well, with a fourth-place finish in a time of 48.55 seconds.  Augustyn was also part of two all-America relays, as the Eagles' 400-yard medley relay finished fourth with a school-record time of 3:18.88, while the 200-yard medley relay finished third with a time of 1:30.91.  He capped off his meet with a 13th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:51.60 in the preliminaries, good for an all-America honorable mention. 

Augustyn scored 54.5 points during the meet for Emory, helping the Eagles to a third-place team finish.
