Emory University senior swimmers Anne Culpepper and Claire Pavlak were each named to the Capital One Academic All-America Women's At-Large First Team, while junior swimmer Peter O'Brien was named to the Men's At-Large Second Team.

It marked the second-straight season that Culpepper has been named to the Academic all-America First Team, and the first Academic all-America honor of both Pavlak's and O'Brien's career.  Being named to one of the Capital One Academic All-America teams is one of the highest academic honors a collegiate athlete can receive.

Culpepper earned all-America honors in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke and as part of the Eagles' 800-yard freestyle relay team.  She finished her career with 15 all-America certificates, and is the current school-record holder in the 200-yard backstroke.  The senior has also claimed three National Championships during her career, winning the 200-yard backstroke in 2010 and 2011, and the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2011.  Culpepper, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and a CSCAA Scholar All-American, has a cumulative 3.86 GPA as an English and Economics dual major at Emory.

Culpepper is just the second member of the Emory women's swimming and diving program to repeat as an Academic all-America First Team selection, joining former Eagle Samantha White (2005 and 2006). 

Pavlak claimed National Championships in the 200-yard medley relay, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2012, running her career national title ledger to nine, the most in the program's history.  She added all-America finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay, and her 20 career all-America certificates are the second-most in the program's history.  She is part of Emory's national record-setting 200-yard freestyle relay team, and has claimed eight UAA Championships and 10 all-UAA certificates during her four years on the squad.  Pavlak has a 3.72 cumulative grade point average as an Anthropology major at Emory, and has already won an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, in addition to being named to the Dean's List on four occasions during her collegiate career.

Culpepper and Pavlak mark the 15^th and 16^th Academic all-America selections in the program's history.  They join White, Becky Mutz (2002), Lillian Ciardelli (2010) and Ruth Westby (2010) as the program's first team honorees. 

Joining Culpepper and Pavlak on the Women's At-Large First Team was women's tennis player Zahra Dawson.  Emory was not only the only school with multiple selections to the Academic all-America At-Large First Team, but no other school had more two selections on the first, second and third teams, combined.

O'Brien was an all-American in the 200-yard individual medley, and as part of Emory's 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay during the 2012 season, an added on honorable mentions in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke to run his career total to nine all-America certificates and four honorable mentions.  The junior was named the UAA Swimmer of the Year in 2012, winning conference titles in six events and setting conference records in two.  He is also the school record holder in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke.  O'Brien is a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American and a two-time Academic all-UAA honors, accumulating a 3.67 GPA during his time at Emory.

O'Brien is the 16^th Academic all-American in the history of the Emory Men's Swimming and Diving program.  Emory has now had 133 athletes named Academic All-Americans, 52 of which have been selected to the first team.

The Emory women claimed their third-straight NCAA Division III Championship in 2012, while the Emory men finished third for the third-straight season.

Sports represented on the 'At-Large' team include women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution, and be selected to an Academic all-District team.
