800 Freestyle Relay Breaks National Record; Emory Men Widen NCAA Lead

The Emory University men's swimming & diving team ended Friday night with an exclamation point, winning the 800 Freestyle Relay in Division III record-setting fashion.

Junior Pat Pema, sophomore Logan D'Amore, senior Jason Hamilton and sophomore Nicholas Goudie had an impeccable showing, winning the event by over two seconds at 6:28.69 and beating the previous national record by half a second. All four swimmers had a 1:38.07 split or better, headlined by Goudie who threw down a blistering 1:35.37 on the anchor which was over a half second faster than the 200 Free national championship winning time from Thursday night. The 800 Free Relay title is the third in the last four seasons for the Eagles and the fourth in the last seven.

The win was one of four All-America finishes on the night as the Eagles widened their NCAA lead and will take an 81-point lead into the final day of competition as Emory will be in search of its second-ever men's national championship. Denison stands in second at 257 points followed by Johns Hopkins at 248.

Hamilton and junior diver Lucas Bumgarner highlighted the individual performances on Friday as both turned in third place efforts in their respective events. Hamilton won bronze in the 100 Breaststroke with his finals time of 53.49 and in the 1-meter, Bumgarner posted a finals score of 523.70.

Sophomore Jake Meyer added All-America honors with his fifth place finish in the 100 Breaststroke, registering a mark of 54.26.

To go along with four podium finishes, the Eagles recorded four All-America Honorable Mention swims including three in the 200 Butterfly.

The freshman trio of Jeff Echols (1:50.42), Crow Thorsen (1:50.54) and Dylan Yin (1:51.20) finished in the 14-15-16 positions and in the 100 Backstroke, junior Ryan Soh was 14th at 48.31.

The fourth and final day of action will feature the 1,650 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 200 Breaststroke, women's 3-meter diving and the 400 Freestyle Relay.
