Swimming and Diving Celebrates Senior Day With Dual Meet Sweep Over Centre

The Emory Swimming and Diving teams gave their seniors a reason to celebrate on Senior Day, pulling out wins on both the men's and women's side in a dual meet against Centre on Saturday afternoon. The men were dominant in the pool, sweeping the swimming portion of the meet and winning 13 of 14 possible events. Meanwhile, the women pulled away with wins in 14 of 15 events. In total, Emory won 28 of 30 events in the meet, while recording five NCAA B-Cuts.

The Eagles and head coach Jon Howell honored their seniors with a Senior Day ceremony before the match against the Colonels got started.

The Eagles kicked off the meet with the Mixed 200 Medley Relay, boasting the top-five finishing teams. The combination of senior Megan Jungers freshman Maren McDonald from the women's side teamed up with senior Nicholas Goudie and sophomore Henri Bonnault from the men's side to take first in the event with a time of 1:37.77.

Junior Crow Thorsen led the way on the men's side, who dazzled in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:50.10, good for an NCAA B-Cut and bested the second-place finisher by four seconds. Thorsen wasn't done yet, though, posting another B-Cut in the 400 IM with a time of 3:58.47. He was the only swimmer to finish with a time under four minutes in the 400 IM.

Also recording a B-Cut and event win on the men's side was senior Jake Meyer in the 100 Breaststroke, touching the wall in 55.32 seconds. Junior Jeff Echols secured a B-Cut as well, winning the 100 Butterfly with a time of 48.47.

The men's team posted at least the top-four finishers in eight individual events, including the top-eight in the 100 Breaststroke.

Other first-place finishers for the men included senior Ryan Gibbons in the 1000 Freestyle (9:37.83), senior Harrison Pire in the 200 Freestyle (1:42.17), junior Adam Braunschweig in the 100 Backstroke (49.54), Goudie in the 50 Freestyle (21.0), freshman Hayden Tupper in the 100 Freestyle (46.66), sophomore Will Kohn in the 200 Backstroke (1:52.83), junior Liyang Sun in the 200 Breaststroke (2:04.08), and junior Alexander Pollack in the 500 Freestyle (4:42.55).

The men's team took home the 400 Freestyle Relay as well, with Thorsen, Pire, junior Johnny Bradshaw, and senior Logan D'Amore finishing with a time of 3:06.79.

Senior Alex York finished second in the men's 3-meter dive, scoring a 305.47.

On the women's side, Jungers recorded the team's lone NCAA B-Cut on the day, which came in the 100 Backstroke. She touched first in the event with a time of 56.32. The senior also took first in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:04.91.

Also posting event wins for the Eagles on the women's team was senior Sloane Donovan in the 1000 Freestyle (10:38.11), junior Sarah Daly in the 200 Freestyle (1:53.72), junior Ali Kaiser in the 100 Breaststroke (1:06.36), junior Rosalie Gaudiani in the 200 Butterfly (2:09.84), sophomore Jane Sanderson in the 100 Freestyle (53.22), McDonald in the 100 Butterfly (57.20), and sophomore Meredith Liu in the 400 IM (4:33.94).

The women's 400 Freestyle Relay team made up of McDonald, Sanderson, sophomore Isabel Huang, and freshman Pooja Hemige took first as well, finishing with a time of 3:34.53.

Senior Tess Klugherz got it done on the boards for the Eagles, winning the 1-meter with a score of 270.68. Sophomore Ren Watt also had a first-place finish, her's coming in the women's 3-meter dive with a score of 254.77.

With the win, the women's team improves to 2-2 in dual meets and the men go to 3-1 on the season.

The Eagles will be back in the pool next weekend for a dual meet against Georgia. The meet against Georgia will take place at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Georgia next Saturday, February 3rd. The meet will start at 11:00 AM.
