NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!
(May 19) - The second-ranked Emory men's tennis team claimed the program's second national championship with a 4-1 come-from-behind victory over Middlebury College (Vt.). The Eagles won four singles matches after dropping the doubles point to claim the national title for the first time since 2003.
The match opened with fourth-ranked Middlebury winning the doubles point after taking two of three matches. Ari Beilin and Alex Scott defeated Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka 8-3 at No. 1 doubles before Salih Unsal and Brian Waldron defeated Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman at No. 3 doubles 8-5.
The match between Hardy Ehlers/Jesse Ferlianto and Kevin Bergesen/Nathan Edmunds at No. 2 doubles was not finished.
The Eagles stormed back in singles play, winning four of the six matches. Three of the contests were won in straight sets.
Masuoka dominated his match with Edmunds, dropping only one set while cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.Goodwin made it 2-1 after defeating Waldron 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The 3-1 lead came when Kaufman won a three-set match against Scott at the No. 6 position. After dropping the first set 6-2, he came back to win 6-4, 6-1.
Redmond sealed the championship with his straight set win over Beilin. After winning the first set 6-0, Redmond grabbed a quick 5-0 lead only to see Beilin win four straight sets to cut the lead to 5-4. Redmond then took the final set to give the Eagles the win.
Emory ends the season with a record of 22-3. This marked the school's second national championship of the 2005-06 school year after the women's swimming and diving team won its second consecutive title.
EAGLES TO PLAY FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
(May 18) - The second ranked Emory men's tennis team advanced to the Division III national championship match with a 4-0 victory over Williams College (Mass.) on Thursday in Fredericksburg, Va. Emory will face Middlebury College (Vt.) who upset top-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.).
Emory opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of three matches. Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman won the first match at No. 3 doubles over Daniel Greenberg and Bryan Monier by a score of 8-1.
Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto wrapped up the doubles point by defeating Jeff Kivitz and Bret Thatcher 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. The match between Michael Goodwin/Yoji Masuoka of Emory and Scott MacKenzie/Gary Simonette of Williams at the one position was not finished.
Needing three points for victory, Emory saw Goodwin, Redmond and Masuoka come away with straight set victories.
Goodwin defeated Greenberg 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Redmond took down MacKenzie 6-1, 6-3. Masuoka handled Kivitz 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 to give the Eagles the victory.
Matches not completed were Hardy Ehlers-Simonette at No. 4, Ferlianto-Ted Haley at No. 5 and Mark Boren-Monier at No. 6.
This will mark Emory's third appearance in the national championship. The Eagles previously played in the match in 2003 when they won the program's first championship. They also played in 1996, finishing second.
Match time between Emory and Middlebury is set for 1:00 p.m.
EAGLES SHUT OUT DEPAUW 4-0
(May 17) - The second-ranked Emory men's tennis team moved into the NCAA Division III national semifinals with a 4-0 victory over 11th-ranked Depauw. The Eagles now face the winner of the Claremont Mudd-Scripps/Williams match.
The Eagles opened play victorious at one and three doubles, and
then captured singles wins at two, three and five.
Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka won at No. 1 doubles, 8-2 over
Kortney Keith and Jeff Zanchelli, while Patrick Redmond and Michael
Kaufman won at the three position 8-3 over Scott Swanson and Evan
Webeler.
The match between Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto of Emory and
Billy Eilliot and Bryan Heck of Depauw did not finish with Emory
leading 6-1.
In singles play, Redmond defeated Keith, 6-4, 6-1 at the two
position; Masuoka defeated Swanson at three singles, 6-2, 6-3; and
Ferlianto downed Zanchelli, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
Matches not finished were Goodwin-Webeler at No. 1, Ehlers-Heck
at No. 4 and Mark Boren-Sauer at No. 6.
Emory's semifinal match is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday
on the campus of Mary Washington.
EAGLES SEEDED THIRD FOR NCAA FINALS
(May 9) - The second-ranked Emory men's tennis team received the second seed for the upcoming Division III Finals, May 17-22 in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles will open play against Depauw University (Ind.) on May 17 at 2:00 p.m.
Emory and Depauw will be meeting for the second time this season. The Eagles shut out the Tigers 7-0 on March 25 in Atlanta. The winner of the match will take on the winner of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps/Williams winner May 18 at 2:00 p.m.
This marks the fifth year in a row Emory has qualified for the NCAA Finals., with its highest finish coming in 2003 when the blue and gold won the national championship. The program has finished no lower than third in that time span.
The Eagles reached the national quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over Washington & Lee University (Va.) this past Saturday. It marked the second time this season Emory has shut out the Generals as the team won 7-0 to open the season.
Qualifying for the individual tournament were Michael Goodwin, Yoji Masuoka and Patrick Redmond. Goodwin and Masuoka also qualified for the doubles tournament.
Goodwin stands 17-4 on the season, while Masuoka is 19-2 and Redmond 17-3. Goodwin and Masuoka enter the doubles tournament with a record of 11-1.
EMORY ADVANCES IN NCAA TOURNAMENT WITH 4-0 WIN OVER W&L
(May 7) - The second-ranked Emory men's tennis team shut out Washington & Lee University (Va.) 4-0 to advance in the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships. The Eagles now travel to Fredricksburg, Va., for the national quarterfinals.
With thunderstorms playing havoc in Atlanta, the match was moved to the indoor courts of the Woodruff P.E. Center, where Emory continued its solid play from the UAA Championships.
Emory took the doubles point, winning two matches. Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka won No. 1 doubles over Nat Estes and Tim Ross 8-2. Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto made it 1-0 Emory with an 8-0 victory over Charles Anderson and Jordan Eichenberger.
Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman's No. 3 match with Stuart Sanford and David Shay was not finished.
Needing three points for victory, Emory saw Redmond, Masuoka and Ferlianto gain victories. Redmond defeated Estes 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Masuoka won over Jordan Feibelman at No. 3 6-0, 6-3.
Rounding out the winners was Ferlianto at No. 5 singles, defeating Ross 6-1, 6-1.
Matches not finished were Goodwin versus Shay at No. 1, Ehlers versus Eichenberger at No. 4 and Mark Boren versus Anderson at No. 6.
The Eagles now await word from the NCAA as to who their next opponent will be. The NCAA will announce the pairings Monday.
EAGLES CHOSEN TO PLAY HOST TO FIRST AND SECOND ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT
(May 3) - The second-ranked Emory men's tennis team was chosen to play host to the first and second round of the 2006 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament, May 6-7.
This year marks the Eagles 20th appearance in the NCAA tournament and 17th straight. Since 2002, Emory has finished no lower than third.
The Eagles (18-3), fresh off their 18th UAA Championship received a bye into the second round of play where they will face the winner of the University of the South (Tenn.)-Washington & Lee University (Va.) match.
The first round match is to be played on Saturday with the second round match to be played on Sunday. Times for the matches have yet to be determined.
The teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the first and second rounds played at non-predetermined regional sites. The quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds will be played at the University of Mary Washington. Finals competition will also be held at the University of Mary Washington, May 17-22.
The selection of teams for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
EMORY SHUTS OUT WASHU TO WIN UAA TITLE
(April 23) - The Emory men's tennis team shut out rival Washington University 6-0 to win its 18th UAA men's tennis championship on Sunday. The Eagles did not give up a point during the three day event, shutting out all three opponents.
Emory, who is 18-3 on the year and ranked second in the country, defeated Case Western Reserve 9-0 in the first round before defeated New York University 6-0 in Saturday's semifinal.
Opening the match were three highly contested doubles matches. Emory swept the doubles point, winning all three matches. No. 1 doubles saw Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka defeated Ari Rosenthal and Charlie Cutler 9-8 with the tiebreaker going 7-5.
Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto won No. 2 doubles over Nirmal Choradia and Trevis Bowman 8-5, while Michael Kaufman and Patrick Redmond won No. 3 doubles 8-5 over Zack Fayne and Chris Hoeland.
In singles play, Masuoka and Boren got the blue and gold off to a fast start. Masuoka won the No. 3 position over William McMahan 6-0, 6-0, while Boren won No. 6 singles by shutting out Bowman 6-0, 6-0.
Goodwin and Redmond each won their matches in straight sets. Goodwin defeated Rosenthal 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Redmond beat Cutler 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.
Ehlers and Choradia went the distance, with the Eagles' Ehlers pulling out a 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 win in No. 4 singles.
The match between Ferlianto and Fayne in the fifth position was not finished.
Emory now sets its sites on the NCAA tournament. The Eagles are looking for their first national championship since the 2003 season and will get underway with the tournament May 6-7 with regional play.
EAGLES MOVE INTO UAA CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
(April 22) - The second-ranked and top-seeded Emory men's tennis team defeated New York University 6-0 on Saturday in the semifinals of the UAA Championship.
With shut-out victory, Emory has yet to drop a point through the first two rounds of UAA competition, defeating Case Western Reserve 9-0 during the first round.
With weather being a concern, the format went to decision and singles action opened the match. Emory swept through the matches, winning all six in straight sets.
Michael Goodwin defeated Mikhail Gurevich in No. 1 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-4 and Patrick Redmond won in No. 2 singles over Calvin Chou 6-0, 6-2.
Yoji Masuoka claimed victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Christopher Chang by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Hardy Ehlers shut out Kolby Loft in No 4 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Rounding out the Emory win was Jesse Ferlianto defeating Craig Berger 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Mark Boren winning over Nikko Buencamino 6-1, 6-1 in No. 6 singles.
The Eagles will look to claim their 18th UAA Championship in 19 years when they take on the winner of the Washington-Carnegie Mellon match. Match time is set for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at Emory.
EMORY SWEEPS THROUGH FIRST ROUND OF UAAS
(April 21) - The Emory men's tennis team swept through the first round of the University Athletic Association tennis championships with a 7-0 defeat of Case Western Reserve. The tournament is being played on the campus of Emory University.
The Eagles are looking to claim their 18th 17th consecutive UAA tennis championships. Since the inception of tennis in the UAA in 1988, Emory has claimed the championship 17 of the 18 years.
Doubles action saw Emory win all three matches to claim the doubles point. Michael Goodwin and Yoki Masuoka defeated Benjamin Sinder and Joseph Sinder 8-1 in No. 1 doubles, while Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto took down Jonathan Waldman and Allen Ye at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-1.
Rounding out doubles play was Mark Boren and Patrick Redmond winning over Kenneth Nguyen and Adam Erickson 8-2 in the third position.
Singles action had the Eagles continue their dominate play, winning the six matches in straight sets.
Goodwin won over Smetona 6-0, 6-3 in No 1 singles, while Redmond defeated Sinder 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Masuoka won over Ye 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles, and Ehlers shut down Nguyen 6-0 6-1 in the No. 4 position.
Rounding out play was Ferlianto winning at No. 5 over Waldman 6-0, 6-1, while Boren won by the same score of Cory Darrow in No. 6 singles.
Up next for Emory is the winner of the New York University-University of Rochester match-up. Match-time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
EMORY DEFEATS AVERETT AND PIEDMONT
(April 8) - The second-ranked Emory men's tennis team
defeated South Region opponents
Averett University (Va.) and Piedmont College (Ga.) by scores of
7-0 on Saturday.
The Eagles dominated Averett to open the day's competition.
In doubles play, Michael
Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka defeated Jose Liceka and Daniel McGregor
8-1, while Michael
Kaufman and Patrick Redmond defeated Niklas Karvonen and Ben Pegram
8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Lee Friedman and Mark Boren rounded out the doubles play in the
three position with an
8-0 shut-out over Jeff Imgrund and Robbie Ferris.
In singles play, the day was highlighted by three shut-out wins for
Kaufman at No. 4
singles, Boren at No. 5 singles and Jesse Ferlianto at No. 6
singles. Each won by scores
of 6-0, 6-0.
Goodwin won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Masuoke won 6-0, 6-3
at No. 2 singles and
Redmond at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-2.
Versus Piedmont, Emory once again dominated doubles play with
Goodwin and Masuoka winning 8-1 in the one position, while Redmond
and Kaufman also won 8-1 at the No. 2 position. Ferlianto and Boren
took the final doubles win at the No. 3 position 8-0 to give
Emory the doubles point.
Ferlianto made it two-for-two in singles sweeps for the day,
winning 6-0, 6-0.
Goodwin at No. 1 singles, Redmond at No. 2 singles, Masuoka at No.
3 singles, Kaufman at
No. 4 singles and Boren at No. 5 singles all posted straight set
victories to raise the
team's overall record to 15-3 on the season.

EMORY DEFEATS SHORTER COLLEGE 7-2
(April 7) - The second-ranked Emory men's tennis team defeated Shorter College (Ga.) on the road Friday afternoon by a score of 7-2, improving to 13-3 on the season.
The Eagles improve their road record for the season to 8-3 with the win.
Up next is a home match, Saturday, April 8, versus south region opponent Averett University (Va.). Match time is set for 11:00 a.m.
EAGLES FALL IN SEMIS OF BLUE-GRAY CLASSIC
(April 1) - The Emory men's tennis team fell in the semifinals of the Blue-Gray Classic to Freed-Hardeman University by a score of 5-2.
Emory took one of the three doubles matches, with Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka winning at No. 1 doubles over Everton Silva and Bruno Andrade by a score of 8-3.
In singles action, Goodwin won at the No. 1 position by a score of 6-2, 6-3 for the Eagles second and final point of the afternoon.
Up next for Emory is a trip to Rome, Ga., to take on Shorter College next Friday, April 7.
EMORY ADVANCES AT BLUE-GRAY CLASSIC
(March 31) - The second-ranked Emory Eagles advanced to the semifinals of the Blue-Gray Classic at Auburn-Montgomery with a 5-4 victory over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Emory now stands 12-2 on the season.
The Eagles opened the match, winning two of the three doubles points. Mark Boren and Hardy Ehlers defeated Karim Belhadj and Justin Flynn in No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-4, while Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman won at No. 3 doubles over Jayraj Jadeja and Matt Belenchia 8-5.
In singles action, three Eagles came away with victories. Yoji Masuoka won at No. 3 singles over Flynn by a score of 6-1, 6-2, while Ehlers took care of Belhadj in No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-4.
Rounding out the Emory winners was Kaufman in No. 6 singles over Lico Mejia 6-2, 6-3.
Up next for Emory is a semifinal match with Freed-Hardeman University, Saturday morning.
(March 25) - The Emory men's tennis team claimed its eighth consecutive match on Saturday, shutting out Depauw University (Ind.) 7-0. This marks the Eagles' (11-2) second straight shut-out of the season and fifth overall.
Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka won at No. 1 doubles over Donald Person and Evan Webeler 8-5. Also winning by an 8-5 score at No. 2 doubles was Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto over Kortney Keith and Jeff Zanchello.
Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman made it a clean sweep with an 8-3 win over Billy Elliott and Bryan Heck.
In singles Goodwin won over Perrson at No. 1 position 6-1, 6-2, while Masuoka won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-4 over Keith.
Patrick Redmond defeated Webeler 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Ferlianto took out Scott Swanson at four singles 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Ferlianto remains undefeated on the season.
Rounding out the wins were Mark Boren at No. 5 singles over Heck 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Kaufman over Scott Saner 6-4, 6-0.
Up next for the Eagles is the Blue-Gray Classic, March 31-April 1.
(March 24) - The Emory men's tennis team made it 2-0 versus Kalamazoo College this season with a 7-0 home victory. Emory defeated Kalamazoo earlier this year by a score of 6-1.
With the win, the Eagles move to 10-2 on the season.
Emory swept the doubles with Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka defeating Julian Seelan and Tim Hubbard 8-3, while Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto took down Alec Kempster and Matt Riley 8-6. Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman made it a clean sweep, defeating Dave Atallah and Drew Brown 8-6.
In singles, Emory took each match in straight sets. Goodwin defeated Seelan in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1, while Redmond beat Atallah 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.
Yoji Masuoka won at No. 3 singles over Kempster 6-0, 6-4, while Hardy Ehlers won at No. 5 over Hubbard 7-5, 6-4.
Jesse Ferlianto remained undefeated on the year with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Matt Wise at No. 5 singles. Mark Boren rounded out the singles competition at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Luke Marker.

EMORY TAKES DOWN ABAC 6-1
(March 21) - The Emory men's tennis team won its sixth straight
match on Tuesday, defeating Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
(Ga.) by a score of 6-1.
Emory claimed all three doubles matches to earn the first point. Claiming victories were Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka at No. 1 singles, Hardy Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto at No. 2 singles and Patrick Redmond and Michael Kaufman at No. 3 singles.
Claiming singles wins were Goodwin at No. 1 7-6 (3), 6-3, Masuoka at No. 2 4-6, 7-5, 13-11, Redmond at No. 3 6-3, 6-4, Ferlianto at No. 5 6-1, 6-2 and Mark Boren at No. 6 7-5, 6-4.
Up next for the Eagles will be a rematch with Kalamazoo College (Mich.) on Friday, March 24. Match-time is set for 2:30 p.m. Emory and Kalamazoo have already met once this year with the Eagles taking a 6-1 victory at the ITA Indoor Nationals.

(March 17) - The Emory men's tennis team moved to 8-2 on the season
with a 4-1 victory over Claremont McKenna College.
This marked Emory's third straight win in as many days on its
California road trip. The
squad closes out the trip Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer.

The Eagles then return home for a match with Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College (Ga.).

EMORY EDGES PAST AZUSA PACIFIC 5-4
(March 16) - The Emory men's tennis team won its second match in as many days with a 5-4 victory over NAIA's top-ranked team, Azusa Pacific, on Thursday afternoon.
With the win Emory moves to 7-2 on the season.
The Eagles continue their west coast swing with Claremont McKenna College on Friday morning before closing out the trip against Pomona-Pitzer Saturday.
(March 15) - The Emory Eagles defeated Redlands in the first of the team's three-match road trip through California by a score of 6-1.
Redlands opened the match by winning the doubles points. Jesse Ferlianto and Patrick Redmond one their doubles match, but Hardy Ehlers and Yoji Masuoka and Michael Goodwin and Michael Kaufmann fell in their respective matches.
Emory bounced back to then win all six singles matches for its third straight victory.

EMORY CLAIMS HOME OPENER OVER BERRY 6-1
(March 6) - The Emory men's tennis team claimed its home opener over Berry College Monday afternoon by a score of 6-1. The Eagles now stand 5-2 on the season.
Emory opened the match claiming the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Winning were Patrick Redmond and Jesse Ferlianto at No. 1 doubles 9-7, as well as Michael Goodwin and Mark Boren at No. 3 singles 8-4.
The Eagles claimed five of the six singles matches. Goodwin defeated Andre Ferreira 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. Redmond won over Christian Jackle at No. 2 singles 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, while Yoji Masuoka won No. 3 singles over Diego Cerzosimo 6-2, 6-0.
Rounding out the winners were Ferlianto and Boren at five and six singles, respectively. Ferlianto defeated Philip Campbell 6-2, 6-2, while Boren swept Adam Clifton 6-2, 6-2.
The Eagles are off until next Wednesday when they travel to California to compete against the University of the Redlands, March 15. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. PST.
EAGLES RETURN TO WINNING FORM OVER KALAMAZOO, 6-1
(Feb. 26) - The third-ranked Emory men's tennis team returned to its winning ways with a 6-1 victory over No. 7 Kalamazoo College (Mich.) to claim third place in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Emory claimed the doubles point over Kalamazoo, winning all three matches. Michael Goodwin and Hardy Ehlers teamed to win No. 1 doubles 6-3 over Julian Seelan and Tim Hubbard. Patrick Redmond and Jesse Ferlianto defeated Alec Kempster and Matt Riley 8-2 in No. 2 doubles, while Mark Boren and Yoji Masuoka won No. 3 doubles, 8-5, over Dave Atallah and Drew Brown.
The Eagles proceeded to win five of the six singles matches. Boren easily won his match over Hubbard in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. The remaining four singles matches were all played to three sets. Masuoka beat Atallah in No. 2 singles 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), while Redmond beat Kempster 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in No. 3 singles.
In No. 4 singles, Ferlianto defeated Matt Wise 7-2, 4-6, 11-9, while Hardy Ehlers claimed No. 6 singles over Carlos Rincon 7-6(7-5), 7-6 (7-4).
Seelan got the lone point for Emory, defeating Goodwin in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4.

EMORY TAKES TOUGH LOSS TO GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS
(Feb. 25) - The third-ranked Emory men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 4 and tournament host Gustavus Adolphus Saturday evening.
Jesse Ferlianto was the lone bright spot for the Eagles, as he won his singles match over Roy Bryan by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 15-13.
All six singles matches went to through sets as the two rivals battled back and forth. Michael Goodwin lost to Loren Collins 6-0, 1-6, 6-1. Yoji Masuoka fell to Adam Morgan 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, while Patrick Redmond was defeated by Jesse Brauer 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Mark Boren lost to Andy Bryan 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, while Hardy Ehlers fell to Brett Morse-Karzen 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.
Gustavus Adolphus also won the doubles point, taking all three matches.
Emory looks to regroup in the consolation match, as it is set to face Kalamazoo College.
EAGLES MOVE INTO SEMIFINALS OF ITA NATIONAL INDOORS WITH 7-0 WIN
(Feb. 24) - The third-ranked Emory men's tennis team claimed a 7-0 victory over fifteenth-ranked California Lutheran, Friday, to move into the semfinals of the 2006 ITA National Indoor Championships.
Emory swept the doubles competition, with Michael Goodwin and Hardy Ehlers defeating Karlo Arapovic and Joel Wetterholm 8-6 in No. 1 doubles.. Patrick Redmond and Jesse Ferlianto beat Jacob Jensen and Ryan Felix 8-5 in No. 2 doubles, while Mark Boren and Yoji Masuoka and beat Paul Wetterholm and Remy Salvador in No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
Goodwin defeated Arapovic in No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2, while Masuoko beat Joel Wetterholm in No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2. Redmond swept through his No. 3 singles match over Derek Starleaf 6-0, 6-0.
Boren won at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-2 over Jensen, while Ferlianto and Ehlers won their matches in straight sets as well. Ferlianto defeated Salvador in No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-2 and Ehlers beat Wetterholm in No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-1.
Up next for the blue and gold is tournament host and fourth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus.
EMORY SPLITS ON FINAL DAY OF FURMAN SHOOTOUT
(Feb. 18) - The Emory men's tennis team went 1-1 on the final day of the Furman Shootout in Greeneville, S.C.
The Eagles opened Saturday with a 5-0 victory over South Region foe University of the South to move to 2-0 on the season.
For the second time in as many matches, Emory swept through singles to take the victory. Michael Goodwin defeated Joe Carvalho in No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1. Yoji Masuoka won at two singles over Charlie Boyd 7-6 (3), 6-2. Patrick Redmond defeated Henry Litchfield 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles, while Mark Boren defeated David Pointer in No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1. Jesse Ferlianto rounded out the morning match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kevin Herrell in No. 6 singles.
The afternoon match saw them face Division I school and host school Furman University. Emory fought Furman only to fall by the slimmest of margins 4-3.
Furman opened the match by taking the doubles point. Patrick Redmond and Jesse Ferlianto claimed No. 2 doubles over Scott Kahler and Will Keppen 8-3 to highlight the doubles portion of the match.
In singles the match saw the Eagles claim victories in three matches. Patrick Redmond in No. 3 singles defeated Andy Soheeyk 6-2, 6-4, while Mark Boren beat Daniel Krause 6-1, 6-4. Jess Ferlianto also won at No. 6 singles over Bo Ladyman 6-4, 6-4.
Up next for Emory (2-1) is a trip to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the ITA Indoor National Championships, Feb. 24-26.
EAGLES OPEN SEASON WITH WIN
(Feb. 17) - The Emory University men's tennis team opened the 2006 season with a 7-0 shut-out victory over Washington & Lee University (Va.) as part of the Furman Shootout in Greenville, S.C.
Emory claimed the doubles point, with Hardy Ehlers and Michael Goodwin defeating Nat Estes and Tim Ross 9-7, while Mark Boren and Yoji Masuoka took down David Shay and Stu Sanford 8-4.
Emory swept through the singles, with Goodwin winning No. 1 singles over Jon Malooly 6-4-6-2. Masuoka defeated Shay in No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1, while Patrick Redmond beat Seth Feibelman 6-0, 6-1 in the third position.
Mark Boren won at four singles over Estes 6-4, 6-0, while Ehlers and Jesse Ferlianto picked up wins as well. Ehlers won at No. 5 singles over Ross 6-3, 6-1 and Ferlianto rounded out the sweep at six singles over Charles Anderson 6-2, 6-1.
The Eagles return to action Saturday with two matches. They open play against South Region opponent University of the South (Tenn.), before taking on host school and NCAA Division I member Furman University.
