After capturing the NCAA Division III national title in 2006, the 2007 edition of the Emory men's tennis team fell just short in its quest to defend its crown, finishing runner-up to UC-Santa Cruz. Despite the setback, the Eagles of Head Coach John Browning enjoyed a successful season with many highlights.
For the record, the squad finished with a 22-9 record, the fourth straight year of 20 or more wins, and No. 2 national ranking. Emory advanced to at least the NCAA quarterfinals for the 16th consecutive year and the 2006-07 campaign represented the sixth straight year that it had advanced to the semifinals or beyond. The Eagles were second in 2002 and 2007, won national titles in 2003 and 2006 and finished third in 2004 and 2005.
Along the way, Emory claimed its 18th straight UAA title, edging Washington University, 5-4, in the title match. Emory saw five of its players bring home All-UAA honors including Michael Goodwin and senior Yoji Masuoka who gained first-team recognition at No. 1 doubles. Hardy Ehlers was the other Eagles' netter to land a first-team spot at No. 4 singles. Masuoka (No. 2 singles), Oliver Lopp (No. 3 singles) and Michael Kaufman (No. 6) all earned second-team selections.
Goodwin, who battled his way to a 25-9 ledger, earned All-America recognition for the second straight season in singles by virtue of his championship at the ITA Regionals. The Rockville, Maryland, native, also garnered All-America kudos in doubles as he teamed with Michael Kaufman for a title at the ITA Regionals. He finished with a 17-7 dual record at his No. 1 singles post.
Masouka closed out his career in fine fashion, recording a 17-9 overall record, 16-8 in dual competition. His 73 career wins placed him eighth on Emory's all-time list and he was the recipient of Emory's 2006-07 McCord Award, awarded for an outstanding career or season performance in an individual-based sport.
