EMORY'S MICHAEL GOODWIN AND YOJI MASUOKA COME OUT ON SHORT END IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES MATCH

The Emory University men's tennis doubles team of sophomore Michael Goodwin and senior Yoji Masuoka made a stirring run at the NCAA Championships this weekend but fell short in their bid for a title. The Eagles' duo advanced to the championship match where they fell to the UC-Santa Cruz tandem of Matt Seeberger and Max Ortiz, 7-6, 4-6, 3-6.

One of 16 doubles team to start out, Goodwin and Masuoka opened with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Randy Lofgren and Kevin Newman of Denison University. In the quarterfinals, they continued on following hotly contested 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over Claremont-Mudd Scripps' Lawrence Wang and Guillaume. Goodwin and Masuoka advanced to the championship match when they topped the UC-Santa Cruz team of Max Liberty-Point and Bryan Pybas, 6-4, 7-6.

Goodwin and Masuoka, entered the nationals ranked as the No. 3 team in Division III and finished the 2006-07 season with a 23-8 record in doubles action.

EMORY'S MICHAEL GOODWIN AND YOJI MASUOKA COMPETE AT NCAA SINGLES/DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP

The Emory University men's tennis program is represented by sophomore Michael Goodwin and senior Yoji Masuoka at the 2007 NCAA Division III Singles/Doubles Championships. The duo were part of the 32-player singles competition and 16-doubles teams that were looking to bring home championships.

On Friday, Masuoka captured his opening singles match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Joshua Williams of Wheaton College. Masuoka's run ended in the round of 16 when Conrad Olson of Middlebury College recorded a 6-4, 6-1 triumph.

In his first singles match, Goodwin fell victim to Bryan Pybas of UC-Santa Cruz, 3-6, 6-0.

While Goodwin and Masuoka were both eliminated from singles action, they combined to record a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Randy Lofgren and Kevin Newman of Denison University in doubles. With the win, Goodwin and Masuoka advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tandem of Lawrence Wang and Guillaume Schils.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM FALLS SHORT IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH TO UC-SANTA CRUZ

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team fell short in its bid to defend its Division III national title this afternoon, falling to No. 1-ranked UC-Santa Cruz by a 5-1 score in the championship match. The loss dropped Emory's record to 22-9 while the Slugs upped their record to 21-5. The match was held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Saint Louis.

Emory's lone point of the day came at No. 2 doubles where sophomore Michael Kaufman and freshman Oliver Lopp recorded an 8-5 win over Max Liberty-Point and Bryan Pybas. The Slugs held a 2-1 edge heading into singles play and posted wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to close the match out and bring home the program's sixth national crown.

Emory's Michael Goodwin, the No. 3-ranked singles player in Division III, and the Slugs' Matt Seeberger, the No. 1-ranked performer, did not finish their match with each player winning one set. There is a chance that the two could meet again in the singles competition that is slated to begin on Friday at 9:00 .m.

Joining Goodwin in the 32-player singles competition will be teammate Yoji Masuoka. The pair will also be competing in the doubles competition, where they are ranked No. 3 in the nation.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAMS EARNS HARD-FOUGHT WIN OVER MIDDLEBURY - ADVANCES TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team earned a spot in the title match of the NCAA Division III Championships this afternoon following a thrilling 5-4semifinal win over Middlebury College. The win upped the Eagles' overall record to 22-8 while Middlebury closed out its year at 22-2. This afternoon's contest was a rematch of last year's national championship match and lasted over five and one-half hours.

The outcome of the match came down to the No. 2 singles showdown between Emory senior Yoji Masuoka and the Panthers' Conrad Olson. After dropping the first set, Masuoka rallied for a 7-6 (1) win in the second set. In the decisive third set, Masuoka faced a 5-3 deficit before rallying to claim the next four games to record a nerve-wracking 7-5 win. Masuoka's victory gave Emory just its second lead of the day.

Emory got off to a 1-0 advantage following Masuoka's and Michael Goodwin's win at No. 1 doubles against Alex Scott and George Mayer, 8-4. The Panthers fought back to claim a 2-1 lead in the match as Kevin Bergesen and Andrew Thompson brought home a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles over Emory's Michael Kaufman and Oliver Lopp while Filip Marinkovic and Olson topped the Eagles' tandem of Chris Jordan and Hardy Ehlers, 8-6, at No. 3.

Goodwin knotted the match following a strong showing at No. 1 singles where he topped Alex Scott, 6-2, 6-1. After a Bergesen win at No. 4 singles enabled Middlebury to take a 3-2, the Eagles tied the match again when freshman Oliver Lopp battled for a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory over George Mayer at No. 3 singles. After falling behind by a 4-3 margin, sophomore Mark Boren came through with a win at No. 5 singles over Andrew Thompson that deadlocked the match and set the stage for the No. 2 singles outcome.

"It was a battle, that's for sure," said Emory Head Coach John Browning. "Coming out of the doubles, we were down a point and it seemed like an uphill battle most of the day. But the guys really dug down deep and found a way to get the win and move on. I'm proud of the effort and resolve they displayed today."

Emory now faces No. 1-ranked UC-Santa Cruz (20-5) in the title match on Thursday starting at 10:00 a.m. (CDT). UC-Santa Cruz advanced to the finals following a 5-0 win in the semis against Gustavus Adolphus

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAMS BREEZES BY TRINITY IN NCAA QUARTERFINALS - WILL MEET MIDDLEBURY IN SEMIS

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team continued its quest to defend its national championship today as it recorded an impressive 5-0 win over Trinity University in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Championships are being held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Saint Louis. The win upped Emory's record to 21-8 while Trinity closed out its year at 18-5.

As has been the case throughout the NCAA Tournament, the Eagles got off to a strong start by winning all three of the doubles points. Emory's No. 1 team of Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka came away with a hard-fought 8-6 decision over the Tigers' tandem of Oliver Gaines and Ryan DeSantis. The No. 3 doubles team of Chris Jordan and Hardy Ehlers gave Emory a 2-0 edge in the match following an 8-5 triumph over David Tran and Crisanto Ramierz. Michael Kaufman and Oliver Lopp closed out the sweep at doubles with an 8-3 decision over D.J. Petros and James Furr at the No. 2 spot.

In singles action, Goodwin increased his overall record to 24-8 with a decisive 6-0, 6-2 verdict over Gaines at the No. 1 position. Lopp, playing No. 3, closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Furr.

Emory now advances to the semifinals where it where it meet Middlebury College (21-1), also ranked third in the nation, on Friday starting at 10:00 a.m. (CDT).

NO. 3-RANKED EMORY MEN'S TENNIS BATTLES TRINITY IN NCAA QUARTERFINAL ACTION

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team will battle No. 7-ranked Trinity University on Tuesday, May 15, at 9:00 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championships. The Eagles of Head Coach John Browning look to defend their national title of a year ago as a total of eight teams enter the final week of the season.

Emory has an overall record of 20-8 and defeated Baruch College and Swarthmore last week in regional action. The Tigers of Trinity meet the Eagles with a ledger of 18-4 are coming off victories over Mary Washington and Johns Hopkins last week to advance.

The winner of the match advances to the semifinals on Wednesday to play either Middlebury or DePauw starting at 10:00 a.m. The championship match is slated for Thursday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship will be held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Saint Louis.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS SQUAD ADVANCES TO NCAA QUARTERFINALS FOLLOWING WIN OVER SWARTHMORE

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday following a 5-0 win over host Swarthmore College in the region championship. The win increased Emory's record to 20-8 this year while Swarthmore closed out its season with a ledger of 7-10.

As was the case on Saturday, the Eagles raced out to a 3-0 lead following a sweep of the doubles play. Sophomore Michael Goodwin and senior Yoji Masuoka raised their record to 18-6 at No. 1 following an 8-3 decision against Join Reiss and Jon Lo. At the No. 2 position, sophomore Michael Kaufman and freshman Oliver Lopp topped of the Garnet duo of Brian Nalitt and Kevin Shaughnessy, 8-2. Junior Hardy Ehlers and freshman Chris Jordan came away with an 8-3 verdict against Willy Nolan and Marc Greenburg at No. 3.

Ehlers gave Emory a 4-0 edge following his 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Nolan at No. 4 singles while Lopp closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 verdict against Nalitt at the No. 3 post.

Emory will play No. 7-ranked Trinity on Tuesday, May, 15, in the quarterfinals held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Saint Louis. The semifinals will be played on the 16th and the championship match is slated for May 17.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS OPENS NCAA TOURNAMENT WITH WIN

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team opened its defense of its national title with a convincing 5-0 win over Baruch College in a second-round match of the NCAA Division III Tournament. This weekend's first, second and third round matches are being held at Swarthmore College. The victory boosted Emory's overall record to 19-8 while Baruch closed out its season at 12-5.

Emory enjoyed a solid 3-0 lead following a sweep of the doubles competition. Sophomore Michael Goodwin and senior Yoji Masuoka raised their record to 17-6 at No. 1 following an 8-0 decision against Emanuel Imperial and Timmy Leon. At the No. 2 slot, sophomore Michael Kaufman and freshman Oliver Lopp disposed of the Bearcats' duo of Alex Sokol and Michalis Zevlakis, 8-2. Junior Hardy Ehlers and freshman Chris Jordan posted an 8-0 blanking of Dumitru Pitu and Ramon-Shane Johnson at No. 3.

Emory kept the pressure on in singles as Goodwin and Masuoka registered triumphs at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Goodwin raised his singles record to 23-8 this season while Masuoka improved to 15-7.

Emory will play either host Swarthmore or the College of New Jersey on Sunday (May 6) at noon in a third-round contest with the winner advancing to the national quarterfinals on Tuesday, May, 15, in Saint Louis.

NO. 3-RANKED EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM EARNS NCAA TOURNEY SPOT

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team starts the quest to defend its national title this weekend when it takes part in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The 41-team field was announced Monday evening.

The Eagles of Head Coach John Browning are seeded No. 1 in the five-team regional that will be hosted by Swarthmore College. Emory drew a first-round bye and will play on Saturday against the winner of the Baruch College - Alvernia College contest that will be played on Friday. In another second-round match-up, host Swarthmore will battle The College of New Jersey on Saturday. The third round will be played on Sunday with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals on May 15 in St. Louis. The times of this weekend's matches will be determined later this week.

Emory earned its 18th consecutive bid to the national tournament by virtue of its championship performance in the University Athletic Association Championships this past weekend. The Eagles topped Washington University, 5-4, in the title match and earned the automatic bid. It represented the Eagles' 19th conference title in 20 seasons.

The Eagles have captured two national titles during Browning's tenure, the first coming in 2003 and then last year's run that that saw the squad post a win over Middlebury College in the title showdown.

Both Baruch College and Alvernia College will be making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats of Baruch (11-4) played their way into the tournament by defeating Brooklyn College, 5-4, in the CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament championship. The Crusaders of Alvernia (8-1) earned a berth by winning the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS SQUAD BRINGS HOME UAA CHAMPIONSHIP

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team captured the program's 18th consecutive University Athletic Association title this afternoon with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over No. 9-ranked Washington University. The win upped Emory's record to 18-8 and represented the Eagles' 19th team crown in 20 seasons.

Emory faced a 2-1 deficit following doubles with sophomore Michael Goodwin, slowed with back problems, and senior Yoji Masuoka recording the Eagles' lone point with an 8-3 decision over Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland.

In singles action, Emory was pushed to the limit but found a way to win four of the six matches. Despite dropping their first sets, Oliver Lopp and Michael Kaufman battled back to post victories at No. 3 & No. 6, respectively. Lopp topped the Bears' Chris Hoeland, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3 while Kaufman emerged with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 verdict over Nirmal Chovadia. Emory junior Hardy Ehlers match at No. 4 proved to be the clinching point for Emory as he posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision over the Bears' Danny Levy. Sophomore Mark Boren dispatched Charlie Howard, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot.

The Eagles return home Sunday evening and will find out their fate in regards to the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM ROLLS PAST CHICAGO - PLAYS WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY FOR UAA CHAMPIONSHIP

(Apr. 29) -- The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team breezed by the University of Chicago Saturday afternoon and in the process earned a spot in the championship match of the University Athletic Association Championships. The Eagles raised their record to 17-8 following a 6-0 triumph over the Maroons.

Emory swept all three doubles points and three singles points. Senior Yoji Masuoka topped Vivek Venkatarama, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 position while Oliver Lopp and Hardy Ehlers registered triumphs at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Emory will look to claim its 19th UAA title in 20 seasons on Sunday when it battles Washington University.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS NOTCHES OPENING-ROUND WIN AT UAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team got off on a strong note at the University Athletic Association Championships with a 5-0 win over the University of Rochester. The victory upped the Eagles' spring record to 16-8.

The Eagles were dominant in doubles play, losing just two sets along the way. Emory's No. 1 team of Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka raised their record to 15-6 with an
8-2 triumph over Michael Burger and Brian Bowman. At the No. 2 slot, Hardy Ehlers and Oliver Lopp came away with an 8-0 decision over UR's tandem of Jason Maher and Michael Kornhauser. Lee Friedman and Mark Boren were solid as well, registering an 8-0 verdict over Adam Crosby and Tyler Socash at No. 3.

In singles action, Goodwin recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win over Burger at the No. 1 while Masuoka topped Bowman by a 6-0, 6-1 count at the No. 2 spot.

The Eagles, winners of 18 of 19 UAA Championships, tangle with the University of Chicago on Saturday in semifinal action starting at 12:30 p.m.

NO. 3-RANKED EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM HOSTS BERRY COLLEGE BEFORE TRAVELLING TO UAA CHAMPIONSHIPSThe No. 3-ranked Emory University men's tennis team plays its final regular-season home match on Tuesday against Berry College starting at 2:00 p.m. Following the match against the Vikings, the Eagles travel to Cleveland, Ohio, to participate in the University Athletic Association Championships. This year's championship event will be held Apr. 27-29 and hosted by Case Western Reserve.

Emory stands 14-8 and the match against Berry will mark the team's first action since an 8-1 win over Shorter College last Wednesday (Apr. 18).

Saturday's championship will be played on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

NO. 2-RANKED EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM BATTLES VALDOSTA STATE AND ABAC ON SATURDAYThe No. 2-ranked Emory University men's tennis team faces a busy day of action on Saturday (Apr. 14) when it plays at Valdosta State at 12:30 p.m. before meeting Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on the VSU campus in a 5:00 p.m. match.

Emory posts a spring dual-match record of 13-6 and is coming off an 8-1 setback to Lynn University, the No. 10-ranked squad in Division II, last Saturday. The Eagles will face a challenge when they meet up with the Blazers of Valdosta State who are the defending NCAA Division II national champions. Leading the way for VSU is Leo Jelinek who is ranked as the No. 30 singles player in Division II. Valdosta State is ranked No. 4 nationally in D-II and shows a record of 11-5.

The Stallions of ABAC are a formidable squad and finished third at the 2006 NJCAA National Tournament. ABAC brings a record of 9-6 into Saturday's action.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM POSTS IMPRESSIVE WINS

The Emory University men's tennis team, ranked No. 2 in Division III, came through with a solid effort on Saturday, defeating No. 8-ranked DePauw and Piedmont College. The Eagles bettered the Tigers of DePauw by an 8-1 count before closing out the afternoon with a 9-0 triumph over the Lions of Piedmont. The two wins upped Emory's spring season record to 11-4.

Emory claimed all three doubles points and five of six singles matches en route to its win over DePauw. Sophomore Michael Goodwin, the No. 2 -ranked singles player in Division III, recorded a 7-5, 7-5 win over Evan Webeler at No. 1 singles as well as teaming with senior Yoji Masuoka to post an 8-4 triumph over Webeler and Scott Swanson at No. 1 doubles. Goodwin and Masuoka are the No. 5-ranked doubles team in the nation.

In the Piedmont match, sophomore Hardy Ehlers moved up to the No. 1 singles spot and manufactured a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mike Robertson. Ehlers and sophomore Mark Boren joined forces at No. 2 doubles and breezed by the Lions tandem of Joey Leonardo and David Gillispie. Boren closed out a productive day by registering a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Gillispie at No. 2 singles.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM FINISHES SECOND AT STAG-HEN INVITATIONAL

The Emory University men's tennis team, ranked No. 2 in Division III, posted a second-place finish out of eight teams this past weekend at the Stag-Hen Invitational. Host school and No. 4-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps claimed the team championship with a 5-4 win over Emory in the title match.

Leading the Eagles' efforts over the two-day, three-dual match contests were junior Hardy Ehlers and sophomore Mark Boren. Ehlers posted a 3-0 mark at No. 4 singles while Boren also went 3-0 at the No. 5 singles post. Ehlers was part of three victorious doubles wins at the No. 2 spot, joining with freshman Chris Jordan in a decision against Linfield and freshman Oliver Lopp for triumphs against Kalamazoo College and CMS.

Emory returns to action on Saturday, March 24, when it hosts No. 8-ranked DePauw (noon) and Piedmont College (4:00 p.m.).

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM EYES CALIFORNIA TRIP

The Emory University men's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, March 15, when it plays at Azusa Pacific University. On Friday and Saturday (March 16-17), the Eagles will take part in the Stag-Hen Invitational hosted by Claremont-Mudd Scripps and Pamona-Pitzer. Joining Emory in the highly-competitive field are Bowdoin College, Carnegie Mellon, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Kalamazoo College, Linfield, Pomona-Pitzer and Washington University. Emory's opening-round opponent will be Linfield, ranked No. 13 in the West Region.

Emory starts its California swing with an overall record of 7-2. In the Eagles' last match, they topped NCAA Division I foe Davidson by an 8-1 count back on March 5. Azusa Pacific is ranked No. 2 among all NAIA schools and will host the Emory squad with a record of 13-1.

In the latest ITA rankings, Emory sophomore Michael Goodwin is ranked as the No. 1 singles player in the South Region while senior Yoji Masuoka is ranked third. Sophomore Mark Boren is the third performer to rank among the top 10 with his No. 8 ranking (at the time of this release, the national rankings had not yet been released).

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TOPPLES DIVISION I FOE DAVIDSON

The Emory University men's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in Division III, captured its fifth straight match this afternoon with a decisive 8-1 decision over NCAA Division I opponent Davidson University. The win upped Emory's spring record to 7-2 while Davidson fell to 4-7.
Emory got off to a solid start, picking up wins in all three doubles matches. Michael Goodwin and Yoji Masuoka were impressive in registering an 8-1 verdict over the Wildcats' Flaviu Simihaian and John Bolton at the No. 1 slot.

Emory continued its momentum and earned five of the six singles points. Goodwin bested Simihaian, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 while Masuoka posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Bolton at the No. 2 spot, raising his spring dual record to 6-1. Mark Boren recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against Eric Noble while Hardy Ehlers and Oliver Lopp were winners at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS FACES BUSY STRETCH

Coming off a third-place finish at the ITA National Indoor Championships, the Emory University men's tennis team faces a busy stretch that will see it play four matches over six days. The Eagles play at Berry College on Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m. before returning home for a pair of matches on Saturday (Mar. 3) against Ferrum College at 2:00 p.m. and Oglethorpe at 6:00 p.m. On Monday (Mar. 5), Emory will take on its second Division I opponent of the season when it entertains Davidson beginning at 2:30 p.m.

In its most recent action, Emory (3-2) defeated Mary Washington, 9-0, in the opening round of the ITA National Indoor Championships before dropping a 3-6 verdict in the semifinals to eventual champ UC-Santa Cruz. In the third-place match, Emory topped hosts Gustavus, 6-3.

Senior Yoji Masuoka turned in a solid effort over the weekend, capturing three wins at his No. 2 singles position. Sophomore Michael Kaufman distinguished himself as well, coming away with three victories at No. 6 singles.

Berry College hosts Emory with a 2-0 spring record and is coming off an 8-1 win over Tennessee Wesleyan on Feb. 22. Ferrum opens the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 28 when it plays at Washington & Lee University. The Panthers will host Piedmont on Thursday (Mar. 1) and play Oglethorpe on Mar. 3 at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Emory. Oglethorpe stands 2-0 thus far and recorded an 8-1 decisison over Spartanburg Methodist on Feb. 25. Davidson currently stands 3-5 and will host James Madision University on Friday (Mar. 2) before playing at Chattanooga on Mar. 3.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM TO COMPETE AT ITA NATIONAL INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The No. 1-ranked Emory University men's tennis team continues its season this Friday through Sunday (Feb. 23-25) when it competes at the ITA Division III Indoor Championships. This year's event will be held at the Swanson Indoor Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn., and host by Gustavus Adolphus College.

The Eagles of Head Coach John Browning are one of eight squads competing in this year's competition. Other teams in the field include host Gustavus, DePauw University, Trinity University, Swathmore College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, University of California-Santa Cruz and Mary Washington.

Emory holds down the No. 1 seed and will meet No. 8 seed Mary Washington on Friday starting at 11:30 am (CST). Gustavus is the defending champion and has drawn the No. 2 seed where it will play No. 7 seed Swarthmore.

Play goes on Saturday and Sunday with the championship match slated for Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. (CST).

Emory tuned up for this weekend's action with a 9-0 dual-match win over Sewanee this past Friday that evened its season mark to 1-1.

The No. 1-ranked Emory University men's tennis team notched its first win of the spring season Friday afternoon with a 9-0 triumph over the University of the South. With the win, the Eagles raised their record to 1-1 while Sewanee fell to 0-2

The Eagles did not lose a set in the match. Sophomore Michael Goodwin, the nation's No. 2-ranked singles player in Division III topped the Tigers' Charlie Boyd, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Senior Yoji Masuoka recorded a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Jeff Lepley at the No. 2 singles slot. Sophomore Mark Boren was equally impressive in registering a 6-0, 6-1 win over Henry Litchfield at No. 3 singles.

The Emory University men's tennis team continues the spring portion of its schedule on Friday (Feb. 16) when it takes to the road to battle the University of the South in a match that is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.

The Eagles stand 0-1 in dual-match action this spring having dropped an 8-1 decision at home to NCAA Division I opponent Georgia State last week. Sophomore Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, MI) earned Emory's lone point, posting a win at the No. 6 singles position.

Sewanee also posts a 0-1 record having lost its spring season opener Monday evening to Cumberland University by a 7-2 margin.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM DROPS SPRING SEASON OPENER

The Emory University men's tennis team hosted Division I foe Georgia State University Thursday afternoon in the squad's spring season opener and saw the Panthers post an 8-1 win.

Georgia State jumped out to a 3-0 lead by virtue of winning all three doubles matches. Emory's No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Michael Goodwin and senior Yoji Masuoka battled the Panthers No. 1 tandem of Mattias Skold and Nejc Podkrajsek before coming out on the short end of an 8-6 score.

Emory earned its point at No. 6 singles where sophomore Michael Kaufmann topped Daniel Balog, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5.

Emory's next action takes place on Friday, Feb. 16, when it plays at the University of the South starting at 1:00 p.m.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM MATCH AGAINST GEORGIA STATE SET FOR THURSDAY

The Emory University men's tennis team will open its spring season at home on Thursday, Feb. 8, when it plays host to Division I foe Georgia State University. The match will be played at the Woodruff PE Center Indoor Courts and start at 2:30 p.m.

The match was originally scheduled to be played last Friday at the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center but it was called because of the amount of water that was on the courts.

The Emory University men's tennis match against Georgia State scheduled for Friday, Feb. 2, has been cancelled. The match was slated to be held at the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center in Atlanta but was called due to wet courts.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM STARTS SPRING SEASON

The Emory University men's tennis team begins its spring schedule on Friday, Feb. 2, when it plays NCAA Division I foe Georgia State University. The match against the Panthers will be held at the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center in Atlanta and begin at 2:00 p.m.

Led by seventh-year Head Coach John Browning, the Eagles head into the spring ranked as the No. 1 Division III team in the country as well as the defending national champion.

Heading up the singles contingent for Emory will be sophomore Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD), who begins the campaign ranked as the No. 2 singles player in Division III. Goodwin is coming off a productive fall that saw him earned All-America honors after advancing to the ITA Small College National championships. In addition, Goodwin and sophomore Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, MI) start the spring ranked as the No. 6 doubles team in the country. Goodwin and Kaufman claimed the doubles crown at the ITA Regional Championships last fall.

Senior Yoji Masuoka (Tokyo, Japan) will be another key cog for the Eagles this spring. Masuoka recorded 22 wins in singles action last spring and concluded the 2006 season ranked 10th in the nation among singles competitors.

Emory will be meeting a Georgia State squad that has compiled a 3-1 dual-match record. The Panthers competed at the Florida State Invitational last weekend and captured two of three matches, defeating No. 71 Furman and Florida Atlantic and losing to No. 15 Florida State.

"We're looking forward to getting started and playing a Division I team is both a great challenge and opportunity," Browning said. "It will be a good experience for our players to compete against Division I caliber opponents. We'll be looking to use this match as a way to help prepare for the National Indoor Championships later on this month."

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM RANKED NO. 1 IN NATIONThe defending NCAA Division III champion Emory University men's tennis team is ranked No. 1 in the nation heading into the spring season in the Fila/ITA Rankings. Holding down the No. 2 spot is Middlebury College while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is No. 3.

In addition, sophomore Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD) is slated as the nation's No. 2 singles player behind Michael Starr of Clarememont-Mudd-Scripps. Goodwin battled Starr in the Division III singles final of the ITA Small College National championships in October. Goodwin posted a 19-4 record in singles play in spring of 2006

Emory University sophomore Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD) has been named by the University Athletic Association as men's tennis player of the week following his performance at the ITA Small College National Championships in Fort Myers, Florida.

Goodwin advanced to the Division III singles finals of the event, defeating Mikhail Gurevich of NYU, 6-0, 6-3, in his opening-round match before rallying for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, win over John Watts of Washington Univ. in the semifinals. In the finals, Goodwin dropped a three-set decision to John Starr of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.

Emory University sophomore Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD) advanced to the championship match at the ITA Small College National Championships this morning with a win in the semifinals. The event is being held at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida.

Goodwin, who entered the competition as the No. 1 seed, defeated John Watts of Washington University, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, and will meet freshman Mike Starr of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in title match Saturday morning (8:30 am). Starr earned his way into the finals with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Alex Scott of Middlebury.

"Michael faced a real talented player and got off to a great start," Head Coach John Browning said. "His opponent got back into the match after the second set and won the first game of the third set. But Mike was able to regroup, changed the pace of the match, and won six straight games to get the win."

The Division III men's singles championship will then take part in the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis and play against champions from other divisions (Division II, NAIA, JUCO) during the weekend.

EMORY TENNIS TEAMS SEND TRIO TO ITA SMALL COLLEGE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Emory University will have three representatives competing this week at the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships. Action takes place Thursday through Sunday (Oct. 12-15) and will be held at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.

Sophomore Michel Goodwin (Rockville, MD) has drawn the No. 1 seed in the men's singles competition while senior Richelle Marasigan (Stockton, CA) will be competing in the women's singles competition. Goodwin will team with sophomore Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, MI) and compete in doubles play as the No. 2 seed.

Goodwin's first opponent will be Mikhail Guervich of New York University. The winner of that match will advance into Friday's semifinals. Marasigan's first foe will be Siobhan Finicane of Pamona College. In doubles, Goodwin and Kaufman take on the Gustavus Adolphus tandem of Mike Burdakin and Charlie Paukert.

This event is presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and administered by the ITA. It dates back to 1986 and determines national champions for NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College men's and women's singles and doubles during the first two-and-a-half days of play. Those champions then compete to become the overall national small college champs (for all divisions) on Oct. 14-15 in the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis.

Each small college division features eight singles players and eight doubles teams who earned spots into this national event by winning their respective Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held over the past three weeks throughout the country.

Goodwin advanced to this event following a win over teammate Mark Boren in the finals of the ITA Southern Championships while Marasigan earned her way following a win over teammate Linda Tien in the finals of the women's championshis. Goodwin and Kaufman defeated Boren and David Caplan in the doubles championship match of the Southern Championships.

EMORY'S MICHAEL GOODWIN CAPTURES SINGLES CROWN AT ITA REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

Emory University sophomore Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD) closed out a successful weekend at the ITA Region Championships on Sunday by capturing the singles crown while teaming with sophomore Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, MI) to bring home the doubles championship. The event was held at the John Guerry Tennis Pavilion and Willett Stadium at the University of the South.

Goodwin, the No. 1 seed in singles action, topped No. 3 seed Kareem Mansur of Rhodes, 7-5, 6-4, which sent him into the championship match against teammate and classmate Mark Boren (Englewood, CO). Boren, who was seeded No. 8, earned a spot in the finals via a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over No. 4 seed Chris Fletcher of Methodist. In the title contest, Goodwin chalked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

In doubles play, Goodwin and Kaufman, seeded No. 3, posted an 8-6 verdict over the No. 2 seed of Mansur and Scott Bayer of Rhodes. The pair met the Emory tandem of Boren and freshman David Caplan (Oakton, VA), who recorded an 8-5 semifinal victory over the No. 1 seed of Eck Vanderlinde and Dru Malone of Oglethorpe. In the championship, Goodwin and Kaufman came away with a 6-0, 6-1 decision.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM CLOSES OUT PLAY AT ITA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Emory University men's tennis team has two singles players in the semifinals and a pair of doubles teams in the finals at the ITA Small College Regional Championships being held at the John Guerry Tennis Pavilion and Willett Stadium at the University of the South.

Sophomore Mike Goodwin (Rockville, MD), who entered the singles competition seeded No. 1, captured two matches on Saturday, topping teammates Chris Jordan (Granger, IN), 6-3, 6-2, and Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, MI), 6-1, 6-1. Goodwin will meet No. 3 seed Kareem Mansur of Rhodes College with the winner advancing to the finals of the 64-player draw.
Sophomore Mark Boren (Englewood, CO), seeded No. 8, topped freshman teammate Chris Redmond (Bedford, MA) in his first match on Saturday before upending the No. 2 seed, Eck Vanderlinde of Oglethorpe, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Boren will battle No. 4 seed Chris Fletcher of Methodist on Sunday with the winner of that going to the finals.

It will be an all-Emory doubles final with the team of Goodwin/Kaufman battling Boren and freshman David Caplan (Oakton, VA). Boren and Caplan, the No. 4-seeded team, edged Oglethorpe's No. 1-seeded tandem of Vanderlinde and Dru Malone, 8-5. Goodwin and Kaufman, the Regional's No. 3 seed, advanced to the finals following a close 8-6 decision over the No. 2-seeded team of Mansur/Bayer.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS OFF TO GOOD START AT ITA REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Emory University men's tennis team enjoyed a good opening day at the ITA Small College Regional Championships on Friday with eight players winning first and second round matches and three doubles teams advancing to the quarterfinals. The event is being held at the John Guerry Tennis Pavilion and Willett Stadium at the University of the South.

Sophomore Mike Goodwin (Rockville, MD), who entered the singles competition seeded No. 1, defeated Benfield Grennsboro, 8-0, before disposing of Barrett Freeman of Centre College, 6-0, 6-1. Goodwin's next opponent will be freshman teammate Chris Jordan (Granger, IN), who topped Brenton Deal of Centre, 8-1, and Henry Litchfield of host Sewanee, 6-4, 6-0.

Sophomore Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, MI), the seventh seed in singles play, came away with an 8-2 decision over Andrew Martin of Methodist and then posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tyler Snedden of Rhodes. Kaufman's next opponent will be Emory freshman Adam Greenes (Waite Hill, OH), who advanced by virtue a 9-8 (10-8) win over Scott Bayer of Rhodes and a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 come-from behind decision against Jeff Lepley of Sewanee.

Freshman David Caplan (Oakton, VA) made a fine showing, beating Andrew Freeman of Methodist, 8-2, and Jonathan Moreno of Rhodes, 6-4, 6-3. Caplan's next foe will be No. 3 seed Kareem Mansur of Rhodes. Senior Lee Friedman (San Juan Capistrano, CA) came away with an 8-2 win over Brick Faucette of Oglethorpe before recording a 6-3, 6-2 outcome vs. David Pointer of Sewanee.

Sophomore Mark Boren (Englewood, CO), the singles No. 8 seed, had little trouble in his first encounters, racing by Chas Dunn of Mississippi College, 8-0, and Dan Schmidt of Centre, 6-1, 6-2. Boren will be involved in another Emory vs. Emory battle when he meets freshman Chris Redmond (Bedford, MA). Redmond topped Walter Freeman of Mississippi College and Andrew Crone of Sewanee, 6-1, 6-3.

The tandem of Goodwin and Kaufman, the No.3 seed in doubles, skated by Rhodes' offering of Snedden and Moreno, 8-2, and then manufactured an 8-3 win against Sewanee's duo of Crone and Burton, 8-3. The pair will meet teammates Greenes and Jordan with the winner of that match earning a spot in the semifinals. Greenes and Jordan posted wins against entries from Piedmont and Rhodes.

Mark Boren and David Caplan will attempt to land a berth in the semis as well following their 8-2 wins against Esterline/Henderson of Oglethorpe and Hardy/Freeman of Methodist.

EMORY MEN'S TENNIS TEAM TO COMPETE AT ITA SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

Emory University has three individuals seeded in the top eight in the singles draw and a pair of doubles teams seeded in the top four top at this year's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional championships.   The event will be held Sept. 22-24 at the University of the South.

Sophomore Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD) is seeded No. 1 in the 64-player draw. At the 2005 Region Championships, Goodwin entered as the No. 3 seed and advanced to the semifinals where he lost to eventual champ and former Emory standout Patrick Redmond.

Sophomore Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, Mich.) enters the weekend as the seventh seed. Last year Kaufman advanced to the semifinals. Sophomore Mark Boren (Englewood, CO) holds down the eighth seed in the singles competition.

In doubles action, the tandem of Goodwin and Kaufman hold down the No. 3 seed. Last year, Goodwin teamed with Boren to claim the championship. In 2006, Boren and freshman David Caplan (Oakton, VA) enter the weekend as the No. 4 seed.

"This fall tournament is a great opportunity for our young players to showcase their abilities," said Emory Head Coach John Browning, who guided the Eagles to the 2006 NCAA Division III national championship. "This weekend will provide me an opportunity to get a much better feel for how our team is going to be. We have trained hard and hopefully the team will be ready to go."

EMORY UNIVERSITY TENNIS COURTS UNDERGOING RENOVATIONS

In what could be best described as its answer to the ABC hit series, ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition', the Emory University tennis courts are undergoing a major transformation this fall. And while Emory students, faculty and staff aren't likely to see Ty Pennington and his cast of designers demolishing before delivering a wonderful new residence in a week's time to some family, the work being done on the university's outdoor courts will have just as a dramatic and positive impact for the school's tennis teams as well as others who utilize the facility.

In a project that started August 15, the tennis courts are in the process of being totally resurfaced while seeing all new fencing and windscreens put in place. Slated for an October 22 completion date, the construction is Phase I of an ambitious plan that includes stadium seating in the future. The work currently being done is being funded by the University as part of a maintenance plan. The courts originally opened in 1983 and though been patched at various times, there has never been a resurfacing until now.

In a process called "full-depth reclamation," the courts will be dug up and then pulverized into smaller particles. That material will be used as a sub-surface base on which to pour the actual court materials. The new surface will be the popular and environmentally friendly "Plexi-Cushion", the same surface that comprises the indoor courts at the Woodruff PE Center.

Another upgrade will have all six courts on the same level and inside one fence. Currently, there is about an eight-inch difference in the levels of the courts which reside inside two fences. In addition, all new fencing and windscreens will be put in place that will incorporate the Emory logo.

"Phase I, with the new court surface and other improvements, combined with the future plans for the facility, will definitely be an upgrade for the tennis programs and Rec Center members," states Myra Sims, Emory's Associate Athletic Director for facilities. "The caliber of the women's and men's tennis teams makes this a much-needed and important initiative.

"And once this is done, the planning and fund-raising to have fixed seating in a stadium type of setting will be underway. Our goal is to have a great complex for our student-athletes to compete in and a great venue for fans to watch from."
