(Apr. 28) -- Juniors Mark Boren and
Mike Goodwin helped Emory claim its 19th straight
UAA Championship while raising the team's dual record to 15-6 on
the year.
Playing at No. 2 singles, Boren recorded a 6-4, 6-1 decision over
Case Western Reserve foe Allen Ye and teamed with senior Hardy
Ehlers for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles. In the semifinals,
Boren and Ehlers combined for an 8-5 verdict over the Carnegie
Mellon duo of Andrew Clearfield and James Muliawan as the Eagles
prevailed by a 5-0 count. In the championship match against No.
2-ranked Washington University, Boren helped the Eagles get off to
a 3-0 advantage as he and Ehlers put on a dominating performance at
No. 2 doubles, besting the Bears' tandem of John Watts and Trevis
Bowman, 8-1. Boren then registered the clinching match point at No.
2 singles where he and WU's Charlie Cutler waged a dramatic
three-set battle with Boren coming out on top, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Goodwin was solid at No. 1 singles, notching three wins at that
spot while also going 3-0 at No. 1 doubles with sophomore David
Caplan. After registering straight-set singles victories against
opponnets from Case Western and Carnegie Mellon, Goodwin rallied
for a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 decision against WU's John Watts, the No.
1-ranked player in Division III. Goodwin battled through cramps
late in the match but still managed to pull out the win. Goodwin
and Caplan breezed to doubles victories in the first two rounds
before coming through with a 9-7 triumph over Chris Hoeland and
Charlie Cutler in the championship match.
(Apr. 14) -- Junior Mark Boren helped the
Eagles to an 8-1 win over the University of the South by capturing
a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Jeff Lepley at No. 2 singles.
The win was his fourth straight dual-match triumph and raised his
spring record to 11-5. In doubles action, he teamed with
freshman Colin Egan to record an 8-3 decision over Lepley and Jay
Hill.
The victory over Sewanee was the squad's fifth straight and boosted
the team's record to 11-6.
(Mar. 24) -- Junior Michael Goodwin was solid
in both singles and doubles action in helping the Eagles to a pair
of dual wins over nationally ranked opponents.
In Emory's 8-1 triumph over No. 14-ranked Amherst, Goodwin recorded
a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win against Zack Lerner at No. 1 singles and then
teamed with Oliver Lopp for an 8-3 victory over Lerner and Mike
Mintz and No. 1 doubles. On Sunday, Godwin helped the Eagles
to a 6-3 decision over No. 12 DePauw with a 6-3, 7-5 verdict
against Kortney Keith at No. 1 singles. At No. 1 doubles,
Goodwin and Lopp came away with an 8-6 win over Keith and Scott
Swanson.
(Mar. 17) -- Sophomore Oliver Lopp posted a
pair of singles victories and was part of a doubles win in helping
the Eagles to a 2-1 record during a Hawaii trip.
In a match against No. 10-ranked Hawaii Pacific (Division II), Lopp
defeated Samuilau Anton, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and teamed with
Michael Goodwin to post an 8-5 triumph over Jan Hroch and Mark
Mestan at No. 1 doubles. Lopp then recorded a 6-2, 6-3 verdict over
Hawaii-Hilo's Stephen Royalty at No. 4 singles in helping the
Eagles to a 5-2 triumph.
(Mar. 4) -- Emory University sophomore Oliver
Lopp captured two of his singles matches and was part of
one doubles win at the Clemson Spring Classic.
Lopp teamed with junior Michael Goodwin to post a win against The
Citadel's tandem at No. 1 doubles. Following that performance, Lopp
came away with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph against Chris Peak of Charleston
Southern. In his final action of the weekned, Oliver registered a
6-1, 6-1, verdict over Austin Stwart of the University of Dubuque.
(Feb. 26) -- Emory University sophomore David
Caplan captured all three of his singles matches at the
ITA National Indoor Championship.
Playing at the No. 4 singles spot, Caplan posted a 6-2, 6-1 win
over Casey Blythe of Johns Hopkins in helping the Eagles to a 6-3
triumph. David followed that performance with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph
against Charlie Paukert of Gustavus Adolphus, and then closed out
the competition with a 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) verdict against
Max Woods of Washington University.
So far during the spring season, Caplan has compiled a dual mark of
6-1.
(Oct. 1) -- Emory University junior Mark Boren captured the singles crown at the ITA Southern Regional Championships this past weekend. Boren, who entered the tourney as the No. 4 seed, posted six wins en route to the crown that enabled him earn All-America status and advance him to the Small College National Championships. Boren dropped just nine games in capturing his first four matches before topping teammate David Caplan, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Boren came away with a 6-2, 6-3 verdict over No. 3 seed David Sutton of Greensboro College. It marked the second consecutive year that Boren had gotten to the title match of the ITA Regional Championships.
