(May 26) - Senior Michael Goodwin of Emory
University closed out his college career as the Division III
singles champion, posting a 5-0 record at the 2009 NCAA Division
III Men's Tennis Championships over the weekend.
Goodwin, who was seeded fifth in the 32-player field, became the
first player in the program's history to win an individual national
championship. He defeated his opponent from Bates College, 7-5,
5-7, 6-1 to win the title.
His efforts sealed an outstanding four-year career that included
nine All-America honors and a top-10 school performer ranking with
75 singles victories.
(May 11) - Sophomore Colin Egan went undefeated
in a pair of matches in helping the Eagles to NCAA second and
third-round victories.
Playing No. 4 singles, Egan went 2-0, recording a 6-1, 6-0 decision
against Kevin Calhoun of Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday. He
also teamed with Chris Jordan for the first time this season at No.
3 doubles and posted an 8-2 triumph over HSC's Philip Parrish and
Tal Covington. In Emory's 5-2 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan
on Sunday, Egan and Jordan got the Eagles off to a good start with
a decisive 8-1 triumph over Fred Lemongo and Evgeniy Bukatin. Egan
then would go on to provide the match-clinching point for Emory
with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) verdict over Marcelo Prata at No.
4.
Egan has compiled a singles dual record of 16-4 this spring.
(Apr. 22) - Senior Mark Boren notched wins in
all three of his singles matches at the No. 3 position during the
UAA Championships.
Boren recorded a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Brian Schmeer of Rochester
in his opening test before topping Troy Brinker of Chicago, 6-0,
6-2, in helping the Eagles to an 8-1 victory in the
semifinals. Boren then came away with an impressive 6-0, 6-4
verdict over Washington University's Max Woods in the championship
match.
His effort enabled to earn first-team All-UAA honors, his second
straight and third first-team berth on the all-league squad.
(Apr. 13) - Senior Mark Boren helped the No.
1-ranked Eagles tennis team raise its record to 15-1 as he picked
up a win in both singles and doubles action in a 9-0 victory over
Christopher Newport University.
Boren, playing No. 1 singles for the first time this season, topped
Eric Shulman, 6-3, 6-1, and raised his overall singles mark to
15-1. Boren also teamed with junior David Caplan to earn an
8-2 triumph over the CNU tandem of John Braig and Lorenzo Sison at
No. 2 doubles, upping their record to 10-4.
(Apr. 6) - Senior Michael Goodwin helped the
No. 1-ranked Eagles tennis team raise its record to 14-1 as he
picked up a win in both singles and doubles action last week in a
6-3 victory over No. 5-ranked Williams College.
Goodwin fashioned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 decision over the Ephs' Nick
Lebedoff at No. 1 singles and teamed with his younger brother,
Chris, to post an 8-3 verdict over Bret Thatcher and Dicken Chaplin
at No. 1 doubles. The Goodwin duo is ranked No. 1 in Division III
and has compiled a 12-3 record this spring.
(Mar. 23) - Sophomore Colin Egan helped the No.
1-ranked Emory men's tennis team to a pair of wins over nationally
ranked opponents over the weekend.
Playing at No. 4 singles, Egan posted a 7-5, 6-4 victory over
Jeremy Polster in helping Emory to a 5-4 win over No. 9
Kenyon. On Sunday, Egan turned in a solid effort with a 6-3,
6-2 triumph over Michael Rardon of DePauw en route to helping the
team to an 8-1 decision over the No. 18 Tigers.
The two victories boost Emory's overall record to 11-1.
(Mar. 16) - Junior Oliver Lopp helped the
Eagles to three wins last week as he went undefeated in singles
play while capturing two of three doubles matches.
In a 5-4 win against Azusa Pacific, Lopp posted a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1
triumph over Danny Colten at the No. 5 slot while teaming with
Michael Kaufman for a 9-8 victory at No. 3 doubles. Against No.
3-ranked Claremont-Mudd Scripps, Lopp recorded a decisive 6-0, 6-1
decision over Eric MacColl at No. 5 singles. In the final match of
the California road trip, Lopp raised his dual record to 6-3 after
registering a 6-2, 7-6 (5) verdict over Ramsey Bernard of No. 30
Pomona-Pitzer. Lopp and Kaufman also notched a 9-7 decision at No.
3 doubles.
The three victories enabled the No. 1-ranked Eagles to boost their
record to 9-1.
(Feb. 23) - Freshman Chris Goodwin helped the
Eagles to a ITA National Indoor team championship over the weekend
with stellar play in both singles and doubles.
Goodwin recorded a 3-0 record at No. 2 singles, including a 6-1,
6-3 decision over Washington University's Charlie Cutler in the
title match. In doubles action, he teamed with older brother
Michael to notch three victories at the No. 1 spot. Included in
those three triumphs was a 9-7 verdict over Wash U's tandem of
Cutler and Chris Hoeland.
(Feb. 11) -Freshman Chris Goodwin was named UAA
Player of the Week following his efforts in helping the Eagles to a
pair of spring season opening victories.
Goodwin went undefeated in singles and doubles action on Saturday
as Emory topped Shorter College and Oglethorpe University. Goodwin
helped Emory to a 7-2 win over Shorter College with a 6-0, 6-3
victory at second singles. He then teamed with his older brother,
Mike, to post an 8-1 win at first doubles. In a 9-0 verdict over
Oglethorpe College, Goodwin topped his opponent, 6-2, 6-1, at
second singles. He and his brother also notched an 8-1 triumph at
first doubles.
(Oct. 20) -- Freshman Chris Goodwin turned in a solid effort at the ITA Small College Championships, advancing to the championship match of singles play while teaming with his older brother, Michael, to advance to the "Super Bowl" bracket of the competition in doubles play. Goodwin posted wins over Patrick Whitner (6-1, 6-4) and No. 2 seed Conrad Olson of Middlebury College, 6-1, 7-5, to land a spot in the singles title match where he fell to John Kauss of Gustavus Adolphus. In doubles action, the Goodwins brought home the championship among the Division III entries, breezing by Whitner and Alex Stoler of NYU (6-0, 6-0) before coming out on top against No. 1-seeded Amrit Rupasinghe and Ben Stein of Bates College (7-6 (5), 6-2). The pair earned the title with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 decision over Mike Burdakin and Kauss. In the "Super Bowl" portion of the Championships, the Goodwins fell short against Michael Johnson and Monte Tucker of Auburn-Montgomery.
