The 2009-10 Emory men's tennis team turned in a solid season, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships.  And while the Eagles saw their eight-year streak of advancing to the semifinals come to an end, the squad finished with a number of noteworthy accomplishments.

For the record, Emory finished the year with a 16-8 record and a No. 4 national ranking. Of the team's eight setbacks only two came against Division III opponents, and the Eagles compiled a 9-2 dual record against D-III teams that were ranked in the Top 25.  In addition, Emory concluded the year ranked as the No. 1 team in the South Atlantic Region.

On the national scene over the last nine years, Emory has brought home national championships in 2003 and 2006, been second in 2002, 2007 and 2008 and taken home third place in 2004, 2005 and 2009.

After a one-year hiatus, Emory brought the University Athletic Association Championship trophy back to Atlanta, the 20th time in the past 21 years that the Eagles had captured the league championship.  After notching an opening-round win against Rochester, Emory topped No. 7-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 5-1, in the semifinals before upending defending champ and No. 2 Washington University, 5-2, in the showdown for the title.  Four singles players and two doubles teams captured All-UAA First Team honors including sophomore Dillon Pottish who was tabbed as the MVP after registering a 3-0 record at No. 1 singles while joining up with senior Chris Redmond for a similar mark at No. 3 doubles.  Sophomore Chris Goodwin, the 2009 UAA Rookie of the Year, was a first-team pick at No. 2 singles while junior Colin Egan (No. 4 singles) and senior David Caplan (No. 6 singles) were the other first-team singles honorees.

After the UAAs, the Eagles turned their attention to the NCAA Championships.  The Eagles ventured to Lexington, VA, where they defeated Wilkes University, 6-0, in a second-round contest before defeating host and No. 25-ranked Washington & Lee, 5-0, the following day which advanced the team to the quarterfinals. 

Playing in Oberlin, Ohio, the Eagles saw their season come to an end when they dropped a tough 5-4 verdict to No. 5 Amherst.

Pottish made a huge impact on the team's fortunes in his first year with the program following his transfer from the University of Portalnd.  The team's No. 1 singles player, he finished with an overall singles record of 26-8 with his victory total tying for the seventh highest seasonal mark in school history.  He earned All-America honors in singles following his championship effort at the ITA South Atlantic Regionals and he concluded the year ranked No. 2 among Division III singles players and No. 1 in the region.  A two-time UAA Player of the Week, he competed in the singles portion of the NCAA D-III Championships and won his opening two matches before falling in the quarterfinals.  He proved to be an adept doubles player as well, compiling a 21-10 ledger including an 11-2 effort with Chris Redomond at the No. 3 slot. Earlier in the year, Pottish and Goodwin earned All-America status in doubles after winning the South Atlantic Regionals.

Goodwin, playing the majority of the year at No. 2 singles, followed up an outstanding freshman campaign with another stellar effort in 2009-10, earning All-America acclaim in singles after advancing to the title match at the NCAA Championships.  Slotted as the No. 4-ranked singles player in the Division III ranks, Goodwin hammered out an impressive 25-9 record with his win total tying for the eighth-highest effort on the school's chart.  Goodwin also earned All-America recognition in doubles when he and Pottish won the ITA South Atlantic Region championship in the fall.  He finished with a 21-10 won-lost record in doubles and teamed up with senior Chris Jordan at the No. 1 spot to compile a 9-1 mark including a 3-0 showing in NCAA Tournament play.

Junior Colin Egan proved to be a dependable performer in the middle of the singles lineup, registering an overall record of 16-5.  Egan came through with a perfect 9-0 effort at No. 4 and was 4-1 at the No. 5 position.  The Chapel Hill, NC, native landed All-UAA First Team honors at No. 4 singles after chalking a 3-0 record including the deciding match in the championship tilt against Washington University.  After three seasons of action, Egan's 77.9 winning percentage in singles outings is No. 7 on the school's all-time list.

In addition to Jordan, Redmond and Caplan, other seniors closing out the Emory careers included Oliver Lopp and Philip Overdiek.
