Emory University juniors Dillon Pottish and
Chris Goodwin have advanced to the quarterfinals
of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championships
after winning a pair of matches on Friday. The Championships
are being held in Claremont, Calif., with Claremont-Mudd Scripps
and Pomona-Pitzer College serving as the host institutions.
Pottish, the No. 1 seed in the 32-player field, defeated Bobby
Cocanaugher of Trinity University (TX), 6-1, 6-2, in his
first-round match before coming away with a second-round win over
Matt Bettles of Bates College, 6-3, 6-1. Pottish, now
36-2 on the year, will meet Andy Peters of Middlebury College on
Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. (PDT). The winner advances to
the semifinals which will be played Saturday afternoon. It
will be the second meeting between Pottish and Peters this week
with Pottish recording a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the Eagles’ 5-2
win over Middlebury in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Goodwin, seeded No. 4, opened with a methodical 6-3, 6-4 victory,
against Erich Koenig of UC-Santa Cruz in his first match before
battling for a come-from-behind three-set triumph in the
second round against Anson McCook of Trinity College (CT), 6-7,
6-3, 6-4. Goodwin faced a 1-3 deficit in the third set before
regrouping to take a 4-3 lead. McCook tied things up when he
broke Goodwin’s serve, however Goodwin returned the break for
a 5-4 edge and then held serve to close out the match.
Goodwin, now 29-4 on the year, will meet Tommy Meyer of
Pomona-Pitzer in the quarters Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.
(PDT).
Senior Colin Egan took part in the singles competition but fell to
Max Frey of Trinity University (TX), 6-1, 6-3 in his first
match.
Goodwin and junior Will Humphreys were slated to compete in the
first round of doubles later Friday evening. The tandem is
the No. 3 seed in the Championships and will open with a match
against Moritz Koenig and Wes Waterman of Amherst.
