Pottish & Goodwin Advance To Quarterfinals Of NCAA D-III Men's Singles Championships

Emory University juniors Dillon Pottish and Chris Goodwin have advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championships after winning a pair of matches on Friday.  The Championships are being held in Claremont, Calif., with Claremont-Mudd Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer College serving as the host institutions.

Pottish, the No. 1 seed in the 32-player field, defeated Bobby Cocanaugher of Trinity University (TX), 6-1, 6-2, in his first-round match before coming away with a second-round win over Matt Bettles  of Bates College, 6-3, 6-1.  Pottish, now 36-2 on the year, will meet Andy Peters of Middlebury College on Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. (PDT).  The winner advances to the semifinals which will be played Saturday afternoon.  It will be the second meeting between Pottish and Peters this week with Pottish recording a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the Eagles’ 5-2 win over Middlebury in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Goodwin, seeded No. 4, opened with a methodical 6-3, 6-4 victory, against Erich Koenig of UC-Santa Cruz in his first match before battling for a come-from-behind three-set triumph in the second round against Anson McCook of Trinity College (CT), 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.  Goodwin faced a 1-3 deficit in the third set before regrouping to take a 4-3 lead.  McCook tied things up when he broke Goodwin’s serve, however Goodwin returned the break for a 5-4 edge and then held serve to close out the match.   Goodwin, now 29-4 on the year, will meet Tommy Meyer of Pomona-Pitzer in the quarters Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. (PDT).

Senior Colin Egan took part in the singles competition but fell to Max Frey of Trinity University (TX), 6-1, 6-3 in his first match.

Goodwin and junior Will Humphreys were slated to compete in the first round of doubles later Friday evening.  The tandem is the No. 3 seed in the Championships and will open with a match against Moritz Koenig and Wes Waterman of Amherst.
