NCAA Interactive Bracket
The No. 1-ranked Emory men's tennis team has earned a spot in the
quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championships following
a 5-0 victory over No. 12-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan in the
title match of the Washington & Lee Regional. The victory
boosted the Eagles’ overall record to 22-3 while the Battling
Bishops concluded their year at 13-3.
For the fourth time in its last five matches, the Eagles held a
dominant 3-0 lead after doubles play. The No. 2 team of
sophomore Noah Simonson and freshman Ayush Bajoria posted the
team’s first point of the bout with an 8-5 decision over
Alexey Rumyantsev and Clayton Sonn, raising their record to 6-2
this spring. Juniors Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys soon
followed with an 8-4 victory, their 21st in 25 tries
this spring, at the No. 1 position while senior Colin Egan and
junior Dillon Pottish won their fifth straight and 20th
of the year in 22 attempts at the No. 3 slot.
Looking for two singles matches to nail down the win, freshman Nick
Szczurek boosted the team’s lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-4
triumph over Fred Lemongo at No. 4. Goodwin then finished off
the contest with his 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 2 over Rumyantsev
upping his record to 21-3 this spring.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges will host the team championships
finals, which will be held Tuesday-Thursday, May 24-26, at the
Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.
Emory’s quarterfinal round opponent will be No. 10-ranked
Middlebury College (18-3).
