The No. 1-ranked Emory men's tennis team has earned a spot in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championships following a 5-0 victory over No. 12-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan in the title match of the Washington & Lee Regional.  The victory boosted the Eagles’ overall record to 22-3 while the Battling Bishops concluded their year at 13-3.

For the fourth time in its last five matches, the Eagles held a dominant 3-0 lead after doubles play.  The No. 2 team of sophomore Noah Simonson and freshman Ayush Bajoria posted the team’s first point of the bout with an 8-5 decision over Alexey Rumyantsev and Clayton Sonn, raising their record to 6-2 this spring.  Juniors Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys soon followed with an 8-4 victory, their 21st in 25 tries this spring, at the No. 1 position while senior Colin Egan and junior Dillon Pottish won their fifth straight and 20th of the year in 22 attempts at the No. 3 slot.

Looking for two singles matches to nail down the win, freshman Nick Szczurek boosted the team’s lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Fred Lemongo at No. 4.  Goodwin then finished off the contest with his 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 2 over Rumyantsev upping his record to 21-3 this spring.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges will host the team championships finals, which will be held Tuesday-Thursday, May 24-26, at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.  Emory’s quarterfinal round opponent will be No. 10-ranked Middlebury College (18-3).
