No. 2 Emory Men's Tennis Tops Washington & Lee In NCAA 2nd Round Match

The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis made a successful debut in the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday, upending 20th-ranked Washington and Lee in a second-round regional  match. The Eagles raised their overall record to 21-0 following a 5-0 decision over the Generals who closed out the campaign with a won-lost slate of 16-5.  The regional is being hosted by Emory.  

The Eagles, who received an opening-round bye, put a stranglehold on the match after jumping out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles portion of the contest.   Junior Elliott Kahler and freshman Ian Wagner got Emory on the board first with a convincing 8-2 triumph over W&L's Jeremy Becht and Ben Fass at No. 2, the duo's 18th in 21 decisions this season.  Senior Dillon Pottish and freshman Brian Kowalski picked up the next point at the No. 3 spot with an 8-3 outcome over Mac Davis and Brian Roberts, while seniors Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys accounted for the other point at No. 1, battling to an 8-5 win over Hayden White and Taylor Shamshiri.

Needing two points to seal the match, Wagner came through at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Becht, boosting his spring slate to 19-2 (22-3 overall).  Pottish was credited with closing out the match after registering a 6-1, 6-2 verdict over White at the No. 1 post, raising his record this spring to 18-1 (27-2 overall).

The win puts Emory in the Regional Finals where it will play North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday in a scheduled 2:00 p.m. start at the Woodruff PE Center.  The winner advances to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships which starts on May 21 in Cary, NC.
