Emory University sophomore Ian Wagner (Columbus, OH) has been selected as the University Athletic Association Tennis Player of the Week after helping the Eagles to a pair of wins. It marks the first time this season and second in his career that he has been chosen for the honor.
Wagner turned in a strong effort at the Stag-Hen Invitational, capturing all three of his singles matches, opening with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Max Sacks of Swarthmore College at the No. 2 slot, before earning a 6-2, 6-0 win against Sam King of No. 5 Bowdoin College at No. 3. In the championship match against host and No. 4-ranked Claremont-Mudd Scripps, Wagner accounted for the team's lone point with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 3 vs. Nikolas Marino. In addition, Wagner teamed with Elliot Kahler at No. 1 doubles to emerge victorious in two matches.
Wagner stands 13-2 in overall singles play during the 2012-13 season (10-2 in the spring) and is 14-3 in doubles action.
Emory will face Division I member Furman University on Friday (Mar. 22) in a 3:00 pm match.
