Emory Men's Tennis Defeats UT-Tyler In NCAA Third-Round Action -- Advances To Quarterfinals Of National Championships

The No. 4-ranked Emory men's tennis team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Championships after posting a victory over No. 17 UT-Tyler Saturday afternoon in third-round action. The Eagles raised their record to 16-6 following a 5-0 decision over the No. 17 Patriots who finished off the season with a won-lost ledger of 23-5.

Emory received a big boost in doubles, earning close victories in all three matches. The No. 1 team of senior Elliot Kahler and sophomore Ian Wagner rang up their 20^th decision in 26 outings by edging Daniel Brown and Ryan Ybarra, 8-6. Juniors Jackson Isaacs and Ayush Bajoria accounted for Emory's next point by virtue of their 9-7 outcome against Kevin Singer and Ryan Spencer. At the No. 3 spot, Eric Halpern and Simon Lavoie-Perusse had just started a tie breaker against Daniel Budd and Ramon Martinez when rains forced the match inside. Once inside, the Eagles duo won the breaker by a 7-0 count, claiming a 9-8 win and closing out the sweep in doubles.

Freshman Rafe Mosetick chalked up his 20^th singles win of the season after dispatching Ryan Spencer at the No. 4 spot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Ian Wagner then closed out the match in Emory's favor at No. 4, battling to a 7-6 (4), 6-3 triumph over Martinez, upping his season slate to 21-4.

The win over the Patriots propels Emory in the quarterfinals for the 22^nd straight season. The Eagles will meet No. 3-ranked Amherst on May 20 in a time to be determined. The Lord Jeffs punched their ticket to the Championships earlier today with a 5-1 decision over Stevens, raising their record to 29-8.

Serving as the host for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be Kalamazoo College.
