Emory Men's Tennis Battles Amherst In NCAA D-III Quarterfinals

The fourth-ranked Emory University men's tennis team will pack its bags and head to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where it will attempt to defend its national title at the NCAA Division III Championships, May 20-22. Serving as the host of this year's Championships will be Kalamazoo College.

The Eagles, 16-6 on the year, will battle No. 3-ranked Amherst on Monday in the quarterfinals. The Lord Jeffs, the top-ranked team in the Northeast Region advanced to nationals following a 5-0 victory over the The College of New Jersey in second-round regional play followed by a 5-1 decision over Stevens. Amherst claims three of the top four singles players in its region including top-ranked junior Joey Fritz.

The winner of the Emory vs. Amherst bout advances to Tuesday's semifinals to meet the victor of the Claremont-Mudd Scripps – Middlebury showdown. CMS heads into this week's action as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation with an overall mark of 28-3. The Stags earned their way to Kalamazoo with a 5-0 verdict over Redlands in the second round of the regionals before posting a 5-1 win over Cal Lutheran in the third round. Middlebury, ranked 11^th nationally, stands 20-4 after coming away with second- and third-round regional outcomes over Drew (5-0) and Johns Hopkins (5-1).

Emory turned in an impressive performance during the regional phase of the Championships, bettering No. 23 North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-1, before upending No. 17 UT-Tyler by a 5-0 count. The Eagles received strong play in doubles against the Battling Bishops and Patriots, capturing five of six matches, including a pair of victories by the No. 2 junior tandem of Jackson Isaacs and Ayush Bajroia, and the No. 3 team of sophomore Eric Halpern and junior Simon Lavoie-Perusse. Following the team portion of the Championships, Emory's No. 1 team of senior Elliot Kahler and sophomore Ian Wagner, who have fashioned an overall record of 20-6 this year, will compete in the Doubles Championships. Sophomore Eric Halpern holds down the No. 1 singles post and will compete in that portion of the Championships. Wagner starts the final week of action with a seven-match win streak in singles, and has give the Eagles stellar play with a 13-1 ledger at the No. 3 spot, 20-6 overall. Freshmen Rafe Mosetick (20-6) and Will Adams (15-3) have been solid at Nos. 4 & 6, respectively, with Mosetick claiming an 8-3 effort at his position and Adams showing a 7-1 mark.

Three of the four teams on Emory's side of the bracket have been crowned national champs over the past three years – Middlebury in 2010, Amherst in 2011 and the Eagles in 2012. This year marks the 22^nd straight year that Emory has advanced to the quarterfinal round of nationals and the Eagles have captured national titles in 2003, 2006 and 2012.

Other quarterfinal-round matches includes Kenyon vs. Washington University and Trinity vs. Williams.
