2013-14 Emory Men's Tennis Recap

The 2013-14 edition of the Emory men's tennis team maintained its reputation as one of the premier programs in Division III.  Using a cast that was comprised mainly of veterans, the Eagles finished the campaign with an overall record of 19-7 and ranked No. 6 nationally.

The Eagles were sent on the road to Lexington, Va., where they defeated North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-0, and No. 12 Kenyon College,  5-3, in NCAA Tournament second- and third-round matches, sending them to the quarterfinal round of the Championships for the 23rd straight season.  Emory saw its season come to and end when it came out on the short end of a 5-1 verdict Amherst, the eventual D-III champ.

After the team portion of the Championships wrapped up, Emory had two players, juniors Eric Halpern and Alex Ruderman, compete in the singles competition.   Halpern defeated Steven Wu of NYU and David Konstantinov of Whitter in advancing to the quarterfinals of the 32-player field, while Ruderman battled Cal Lutheran's Moises Cardenas before falling in three sets.

Both Halpern and Ruderman captured All-America honors with Halpern earning his award after capturing the ITA Regional Championships during the fall, topping teammate Rafe Mosetick in the finals.  Ruderman, who ended the year with a glittering 21-4 record (21-3 at No. 1 singles), was tabbed as an All-American by virtue of his top-8 seed at the NCAA Singles Championships.  In addition, Ruderman was Emory's lone First Team All-University Athletic Association representative, landing the honor at No. 1 singles after posting a 3-0 record at the conference championships. Ruderman concluded the year as the No. 3-ranked singles player in D-III and was slotted in the top spot in the Atlantic South Region.

In addition to Ruderman,  Halpern and Mosetick garnered singles national rankings with Halpern holding down the No. 15 position nationally (No. 4 in the Atlantic South Region) and Mosetick tabbed No. 43 nationally and No. 10 in the region.
