Heading into the 2015-16 season, Emory head coach John Browning faced a daunting task of having to replace three four-year veterans who accounted for 244 singles victories, and who had competed on a national championship team as part of their collegiate resumes. The Eagles were able to meet that challenge, thanks to a combination of improved and consistent play by various veterans along with the contributions of a talented group of first-year performers.
For the record, Emory finished with a won-lost ledger of 23-4 that included a 21-1 slate in Division III matches. The Eagles were ranked No. 2 in the final ITA national poll and were the No. 1-ranked program in the Atlantic South Region. Emory played its way into the semifinal round of the NCAA D-III Championships, the 24th time over the past 26 campaigns that it had advanced to the quarters and the 11th in the past 15 that it competed in the semis.
Emory hosted the opening rounds of the national tournament and, after drawing a bye, defeated Washington and Lee, 5-0, in a second-round match-up. In the regional final, the Eagles bested No. 12-ranked Trinity University, sending them to Kalamazoo, Michigan, for the Championships. Emory defeated No. 17 Kenyon, 5-1, in the quarterfinals before bowing out after a 5-4 setback to No. 4-ranked and eventual titlist Bowdoin the semifinals.
After the team portion of the Championships wrapped up, Emory had two players, senior Rafe Mosetick and freshman Jonathan Jemison compete in the singles competition. Mosetick opened with victories against Glenn Hull of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Luke Tercek of Bowdoin before falling to Zach Hewlin of Whitman in the quarterfinals. Jemison took on No. 4 seed Skyler Butts of CMS and came out on the short end of that match, with Butts going on to claim the singles crown. The Eagles’ team of sophomore Scott Rubinstein and freshman James Spaulding competed in the Doubles Championship with the pair capturing their Round of 16 contest before losing in the quarters.
Emory earned its second straight University Athletic Association Championship, topping New York University and No. 8 Carnegie Mellon by 8-1 counts before posting a 6-3 triumph vs. No. 7 Washington University in the showdown for the title. Emory dominated the All-UAA Team with five players garnering first-team berths in singles while Mosetick and Jemison were first-team honorees at No. 2 doubles. Mosetick was tabbed as the league’s Most Valuable Player while Jemison was selected as Rookie of the Year. Browning, along with assistants Chris Goodwin and Ian Wagner, were named the conference’s Coaching Staff of the Year.
Earlier in the season, Emory won the National Indoor Championships in Cleveland, Ohio, the program's sixth in the 16-year history of the event. The Eagles topped Kenyon, 8-1, in their first match before defeating Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, in the semifinals. Taking on Chicago in the tiitle match, Emory got the better of the Maroons by a 7-2 margin.
Mosetick captured All-America honors for the first time following his first-place performance at the ITA South Region Singles Championships in the fall, defeating Sebastian Sikh of North Carolina Wesleyan in the semifinals and then Jemison in the finals. Mosetick competed in the Small College Championships and advanced to the D-III championship match. Rubinstein and Spaulding also garnered All-America doubles acclaim following their opening-round win at the NCAA Championships.
Mosetick, Jemison and junior Aman Manji garnered singles national rankings with Mosetick holding down the No. 6 position nationally (No. 1 in the Atlantic South Region), Jemison No. 16 nationally (No. 4 Atlantic South Region) and Manji No. 38 nationally and No. 12 in the region. Rubinstein and Spaulding found their way into doubles rankings with the tandem No. 6 in the D-III ranks and No. 3 in the region. Jemison was chosen as the ITA’s National Rookie of the Year after rolling to a singles mark of 27-5 and a doubles effort of 27-6, becoming the sixth player in the history of the program to claim that honor. Manji, a First Team All-UAA pick at No. 3 singles, was recognized by the ITA as the Atlantic South Region’s “Player To Watch”, after picking up 20 singles wins in 26 decisions. Mosetick added to his impressive list of honors with his selection as the Atlantic South Region Senior Player of the Year.
A pair of new faces who gave Emory a boost included freshman Adrien Bouchet and sophomore Andrew Harington. Bouchet fashioned a 17-3 performance at No. 4 singles (23-7 overall) while Harrington finished the year with a 13-6 effort at No. 6 (21-9 overall). Both Bouchet and Harrington were First Team All-UAA choices. Harrington also figured in doubles, joining forces with sophomore David Omsky to register a 16-5 record at the No. 3 position.
2015-16 closed out Mosetick’s career, with the Hinsdale, Illinois, native compiling an overall singles record of 91-29, tying for
fifth place on the school’s all-time victory list. Mosetick finished the season with an overall singles record of 27-8 (17-6 at No. 1), tying for the team lead for most wins on the year and seventh on the school’s seasonal chart. In addition, Mosetick totaled 59 doubles victories, 19th on the school’s all-time ladder, with 49 of those coming over his final two years of action.
